.45 Choices

Greetings everyone!

I have read this forum for a few days and finally mustered up enough courage to post a question:

I am currently trying to figure out what kind of .45 I need to buy I usually love these decisions but I find myself in a conundrum of sorts. I would like to spend less than 1000USD, and need the weapon to be fairly rugged. I don't carry concealed, so size is not a concern....my biggest worry is accuracy. I have owned: H&K Tactical, Wilson Combat CQB, and a Glock.

The 1911, feels best in my hands, and has a more natural point of aim for me than other types of pistols. The Wilson was the most accurate pistol I have fired, and I would love to have another, but I can't afford it. The Glock was very good pistol, but the accuracy was lacking compared to the others. And lastly, the HK Tac was a good pistol with excellent accuracy for less than 1000 bucks.

I have shot most popular hand guns and have no major grips with any of them. Would any of you suggest any other hand guns for me to consider?

I have been through the whole gammit of firearms. I owned the Glocks, the sigs etc. I always find myself coming back to the 1911. If the 1911 feels the most comfortable and you shoot it accurately, sounds like you have made your choice. A nice Colt 1911 would fit the bill nicely.

Well, my favorite for less than 1K is definitely the SIG P220A~!
But, for more than 1K I prefer my Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special.

Somewhere in between, you ought to be able to find a series I Kimber
Gold Combat; or better yet a 70's series Colt Gold Cup National Match.

Take a looong look at the SW1911. Their reliability has been outstanding, the features are top notch, and the price is reasonable.

Compared to all those out there in your $$$ range, the Colt & the S&W are top notch. I like the SW because after comparing it to my Colt, the Smith is damn perfect, while the Colt could have been better (specifically the lower lugs vs link length, plastic MSH, reliability).

Sounds like the 1911 is what you shoot well, go with that. Now you have the really hard part . . . picking which one I really like the series 1 Kimbers, you should be able to find a used one well under your price range.

The good news is that Kimber has dropped the external extractor. Hopefully the new internal extractors will work as well as the old ones.

Have you fired the Ruger P90? It's no $900 1911, but then again it has decent accuracy out of the box. You can get one for each hand and still have money left over to buy ammo. poppy

Fired the Ruger not to long ago, it was a nice shooter.

I wouldn't mind going with a 1911, but the costs to get a decent one are blinding. Where do you guys find them used? I have checked Gunbroker, and Gunamerica, but there is never a really big selection. Is there a site I am missing?

I found alot of my pistols locally. Do you have a shooters forum locally? If not, do a search for 1911's on gunbroker, etc. I always find alot.
You can find a fine 1911 for 600.00.

Don't overlook the S & W line, in addition to their 1911s, they also make some excellent DA .45s.

I have a 4516 and love it dearly.

For <$1000 you can get some absolutely top notch 1911s. S/Ws, Kimbers, Dan Wessons, Colts. In fact for that price only the custom guys are out of reach. I have to admit for $1000 in a .45 right now I would be torn between a SW1911SC (if you like lightweight frames) and a Kimber CDP (if you don't). Both can be found brand new on Gunbroker for $900 or so

So how does the S&W line shoot? I have shot my fathers, and don't remember exactly how accurate it was, (just testing new loads). The only S&W's I ever owned were revolvers which I loved, I would have no problem going to a SW as long as I felt it was an accurate weapon.

one other thing....does the Kimber WARRIOR 1911, shoot as well as a Wilson? I don't mean to waste your time on a stupid question, but the last time I shot my friends Kimber it seemed accurate. What I wasn't impressed with was how "loose" the gun felt. I guess to sum it up, I wasn't impressed with "quality" vs. price. Is this in my mind?

I will be returing to the states in the next 3 months, and wanted to have a weapon waiting for me at my local FFL, not to mention I don't really live in a large town, so shopping will most likely have to be done over the internet. So one last question...how do you know when buying from Gunbroker, or GunsAmerica if you are going to get ripped off?

Indeed, you cannot go with with the two twenty series. However my first choice would be the P220ST followed by the P220R. What is the "A" ? American mag release?

non 1911: SIG P220
1911 under 1K: Lightly pampered Kimber Series I
1911 over 1K: any Les Baer. But try a 1.5" Guaranteed LB.
