I agree with the above post. Bang for buck is a wash at around $1,000.

I have a 5" Wilson CQB, that is no more accurate or reliable than my Baer TRS.

At the same time neither Wilson nor the Baer, is any more accurate or reliable than a plain Kimber Custom II I own.

Plenty of good posts already about the pros and cons of various makers and benefits of price point. I'll just mention that S&W has been making guns with external extractors for a VERY long time and they seem to know how to do it right. I've had two of their 59 series pistols and put perhaps a thousand rounds thru each with no problems concerning the extractors, in fact no problems at all with either gun.

I have also had good experiences with several 1911's from various makers, some had issues but it was usually feeding problems, can't recall any problems that required replacement of an extractor.

I recently purchased two different 1911 Kimbers.

Ultra Carry II with night sights (about $880 out the door) This model has an aluminum "Officers" frame and 3'' barrel, beavertail grip safety, buled finish. It did not have checkering on the frontstrap so I put some Pachmayr grips that wrap around the front strap on it. This pistol has the minimum features I'll settle for in a 1911. It's also the most concealable size of the 1911's. I might carry this one in a Smartcarry or "appendix" carry, the short 3'' barrel is at a premium for those methods of carry.

CDP Compact (about $1,150 out the door) This is a beautiful pistol. Has stainless slide with blued frame. Night sights. Edges are "melted". Lightweight aluminum "Officers" frame with 4'' barrel. It does have checkering on the front strap. I think this is the "ultimate" size for a carry pistol, for IWB strong side carry. The 4'' barrel isn't any harder to conceal than 3'' but the Officers size frame does make a difference versus a full size frame (if you are anal about printing and I am). I can't imagine "needing" any more features than this pistol offers.

Regardless of size or maker, the mil-spec 1911 .45's that do not come from the factory with at least a beavertail grip safety and night sights are not for me. I know those features can be fitted / installed after purcahse, but then it's likely going to end up costing as much or more than just buying the pistol that way to begin with (heck it will cost $50+- just to ship it). I think any pistol used for primary SD should have night sights and the mil-spec narrow grip safety is simply uncomfortable for me to shoot.

I'm on back half of 4000rnds through my Taurus PT1911. The only parts replaced have been a Wolff extra power firing pin spring and 16lb action spring. This PT1911 has reliably digested all JHP ammo and FMJ ammo it's been feed and the only jams have come from SWC type loads that I've tried. I clean it oil it and add a drop of gun grease to each side of the slide after shooting it at the range. I added a Wilson slam pad and ergo grips that took a little sanding and grinding (5min) to fit.

labhound, I started shooting 1911's around 1970. I own 2 now.

Both are made by ARMSCOR in the Phillipines, and they have been extremely reliable and the most accurate 1911's I have owned. I carry one and the other is my night gun. I would not do that if they did not work. They were made in 2003.
They are not fancy, but they will outshoot more expensive "better" pistols and they seem to last forever.

If you don't mine spending less money, I recommend the RIA/Rock Island/ARMSCOR pistols.

See the 1911.org site and check the owners comments on the ARMSCOR /RIA manufacturer's forum.

Thanks for all the info! Like I said I'm new to shooting .45's and so far I like it! I picked up my new Stoeger Cougar 8045 .45 ACP Friday and its great shooter. I really liked the Nighthawk GRP I rented. Great pistol. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a 1911, probably 5" barrel as the Cougar will be for HD and the 1911 will be for range shooting. The main thing I'm debating on now is how much I want to invest and which make to go with. I need a trip to the gun shop to handle as many as I can. All info from you 1911 guys is greatly appreciated!

I think there's something really sexy about this Sig offering. I think it would make a great sidearm for open carry too!
