Looks good. I plan to try some sometime soon. Wish it were a little hotter.

I agree . It looks like a good defense round . Probably not much for hunting . I guess CorBon is the only one making the hot loads in 45Colt .

Oh , ok . I misunderstood . I thought you were going to load your own using their bullet .

Please don't forget Georgia Arms: 200 grain, .45 Colt, Gold Dot, standard pressure (not +P), with 1100 FPS velocity.

Wish it were a little hotter

...standard run of the mill 900fps...

First, I'm curious what you folks are going to shoot that a 250g bullet @ 900 fps won't handle?

Second, although the original black powder loading (the one they called the Peace Maker) for the 45 Colt was a 250-255g bullet @ 910 fps from a 7.5" barrel, none of the factory loads until this one came close to that performance. What's "run of the mill" about this load?

Given its current technology, the Gold Dot bullets are supposed to expand reliabily over a wide range of velocities so it will probably expand at the reported 900 fps. If you need more than that they make revolvers in what's called "Magnums". These run at much higher pressures and go faster (they're louder and kick more to). Quite an inovative idea, really!

Sarcasm ? Really .

Thank you for the history lesson .

Assuming 45 Colt is the revolver we own and we don't want to buy another "magnum" for hunting a 250lb Whitetail , I'd like to see the 250 GD moving a little faster .

Thank you . I always thought of myself as innovative . ;)

Speer says this new critter will expand down near 800fps. I'd like to see a load that pushed one to between 900 and 950, for a bit of "safety margin", but I don't think more heat than that is critical and if I knew it was pulling at least 850 I'd be happy.

Those look good. I will have to buy and try some. Most of my .45 Colt shooting has been done recently, with a hard cast 250 grain LSWC over a fair amount of Unique. This gives just a bit more than 900 fps from my 4 5/8 Ruger BlackHawk, and about 975 from my 6 inch S&W Model 25-5.

If I need much more 'oomph' than that, I will segue to a rifle.

Do remember that jacketed will run a bit more pressure than hardcast since lead is slickerier than copper. If you get that velocity in the S&W, you might end up very slightly into "+P territory", although I'm sure it can eat a modest amount regardless.

You might want to brew up a GD250 version for your S&W that will do 900ish from a 6", for the gun's long-term health...or just don't shoot a lot of near-1,000fps jacketed.

I think that new .45 Colt 250gr GDjHp is like the Speer #4427 .44 Special 200gr GDjHP, the one in the CCI Blazer Al-cased .44 Special ammo. They state clearly (Bullet info sheet - downloadable.) that it will 'open' by 800fps. It is perfect for .44 Special snubbies, a la my S&W 296. In fact, for higher speeds, they have another product. Looking at the bullet, those side walls are rather fragile appearing - they may shear at higher impact velocities. I think the new .45 Colt version may have a good future for thin skinned creatures. They will have to wait a bit around here... deer season ended a few hours ago!

I duped the Blazer ammo's velocities in my various .44's by using 5.7gr of TiteGroup in good .44 Special brass with Federal primers. I wonder where to start - when I get some of the 250gr .45 Colt bullets, that is. I think ~6.2gr T-G may be a good starting point... for my S&W 4" 625 .45 Colt... the Rugers may want some rocket fuel, of course! Now, where to find them...

RWK: Anxious to try Georgia Arms ammo, but can't find any ballistics data on their site. Have requested from them by e-mail. Any other source? A mystery why they don't supply up-front.

tbige . . .

To answer your question, the following is printed on the side of each 50 round Georgia Arms bag:

G45LE "Gold Dot" 45 Long Colt 200 Gr Hollow Point (New Ammunition) 50 Rds FPS: 1100

I am very pleased with Georgia Arms' products: excellent quality, good prices, and very innovative loads. In this case, the cartridge cases are nickel over brass and the outstanding quality is obvious upon inspection.

Again, the need to define purpose - - -

Hunting or personal defense?

G45LE "Gold Dot" 45 Long Colt 200 Gr Hollow Point (New Ammunition) 50 Rds FPS: 1100 sounds as if it would be a very good personal defense load - - A BIT better than the warmish .45 ACP loads in same weight.

My personal feeling, though, is that if I'm to carry the somewhat heavier, thicker .45 Colt revolver, I want something more in line with its capabilities. The 250 at 900 comes close to this, without overstressing the S&W DA revolvers.

The 250 GDHP sounds like a good thing, and I'll probably get some for the times when I I take a notion to pack my Mountain Gun on duty - - We're limited to factory loads. I'm sure it would make a nice whitetail deer load, as well. I can't get away from the idea that almost any place in the eastern half of Texas, you're quite apt to run into feral hogs. While I have great respect for the GDHP design, I rather doubt the penetration capability of it, compared to a good semiwadcutter solid. My standard hunting load is a 276 LSWC at around 900. I won't pick a fight with a B'rer Hawg beyond 40 or 50 yards, and the trajectory is plenty flat enough for that distance, and the penetration is excellent . . . .

Best,
Johnny

I cannot agree more regarding the piggies. They're common in the California back woods (not to mention back YARDS some places) and are one of the most dangerous critters you can run into. The GD isn't the best answer for same, unless you grossly overdrive it in a strong gun (Ruger) and then you lose most of the advantages...

Fellows,

Just to clarify, my posts to this thread deal ONLY with .45 Colt personal defense rounds. I do not believe a JHP is appropriate for most game, although it might be effective – with good placement – in relatively thin-skinned animals.

Best regards.
