I have a 4" S&W Mtn Gun and would like to carry some factory ammo while in the field for protection, not only against 4 legged threats, but also those of the 2 legged kind. I normally shoot my own handloads, but prefer factory ammo for defensive carry.

My question is, are the Winchester Silvertip 225gr (920fps) 45 colt cartridges standard pressure, and are they safe to fire in the Mountain Gun?

My other option seems to be the Speer Gold Dot HP or Hornady Leverevolution.

Thanks.

Mountain Gun

This is an interesting tidbit that I read from the February issue of Handloader concerning the Mountain Gun:

Manufacturers are extremely careful as to load recommendations and pressure levels used in their guns and understandably so. Nonetheless, your Smith & Wesson Model 25-13 will safely digest loads of greater pressure than the traditional .45 Colt factory load (which is well below SAAMI suggested limits of 14,000 psi). The Model 25 (and 625) N-frame is identical to the Model 29/629 .44 Magnum and is clearly strong enough to handle greater pressures and horsepower than factory .45 Colt ammunition. On the other hand, the chambers are not as thick in the web or outside wall dimensions and cannot handle as much pressure as the .44 Magnum. For a couple of reasons, at this moment I am not willing to suggest “maximum” loads for your Model 25-13 .45 Colt; however, in studying the various Model 1917s, 25s and 625s that are chambered in .45 ACP, these guns have the same basic outside cylinder and outer chamber dimensions and are occasionally slightly thinner. The difference is that the .45 ACP is operating with a SAAMI maximum average pressure of 21,000 psi and 23,000 psi in +P persuasion. The point being that your Model 25-13 .45 Colt is safe with loads that generate 23,000 psi, while retaining the necessary 100 percent margin of safety.
With all that said, the .45 Colt handload containing the 280-grain cast bullet from RCBS
mould 45-270-SAA driven with 7.5 grains of Hodgdon Titegroup and ignited with a CCI 300
primer is generating around 14,000 psi and is absolutely safe in your Smith & Wesson. This
load should produce near 950 fps from your revolver with a 4-inch barrel (depending on bullet alloy and lube) and should be suitable for hunting any game in your region.

I almost bought a Mountain Gun and didn't because I always heard that they aren't strong guns. After reading this I wish I would have bought it.

+1

Any commonly available .45 Colt factory loads are perfectly fine in it.

In the grand scheme of things, they fit right in the middle between the Colt SAA & clones, and the big Rugers in strength.

The only exception would be something like the Buffalo Bore +P+ loads for Ruger Blackhawks & such.

But they aren't exactly something you will find at Wally-World next too the Win Silver-Tips.

Thanks,

I really cannot find the Winchester Silvertips in stock anywhere. I see midway and grafs have the Speer Gold Dot 250gr JHP in stock, but not the Winchester.

How do the Gold Dots compare to the Silvertips, as far as penetration, expansion?

Gold-Dots are good.

I have also had good luck with CCI Blazer aluminum in .44 Special, but I haven't tried them in .45 Colt.

The thing to remember is, it's a .45. Even if it doesn't expand fully, it's already bigger then a lot of them!

And a 250 grain bullet is going to have enough penetration to get'R Done I betcha!

I found the Silvertips and Gold Dots at Natchez's in stock. I went ahead and ordered some. Good price 17.95 per box/20 on the Silvertips.
Shipping really bites, but that's the way it is nowadays.

Thanks everyone for the input.

S&W 45 Colt Mt. Gun

I own a 625-7 Mt. Gun in 45 Colt and absolutely love it. I feel that it is one of the best woods carry gun/cartridge combos around. And In my opinion I feel that the 45 Colt is a better fit the N-frame smith than the 44 Mag especially if you reload. You have the option of everything from light cowboy loads to serious 2/4-legged defense loads. I would agree for the most part with brianr23 but I am by no means an expert on firearms construction. For that take a look at the following link to an article by John Linebaugh about the S&W 25/625 revolvers. http://www.handloads.com/articles/default.asp?id=12 If you don't reload Corbon makes some +P's that could be what you are looking for. Their +P's are not as far out there as say Buffalo Bore (they states that their +P loads are "Ruger Only") though they do make a nice standard pressure Keith style load. I have shot many of the Corbon's plus others (1000+ not including cowboy type loads) loaded to levels similar to those listed in the article with no ill effects on my 625. The recoil is not insignificant however and can be close to my scoped 454 Encore. They are a lot of fun to shoot however. :D
