My first attempts at priming .45 Colt have not gone well. I have the Hornady hand priming tool that comes with the black and green trays. I have used the black tray with .38/.357, .44, .45 ACP, .223, 6mm rem, .270 and .308 for years without any problems. The RCBS #20 shell holder (.45 colt) would not fit right with the black tray but seemed to with the green one. The problem is that with this setup, the new Starline brass was getting tweaked in the shell holder and stuck and the primers were going in crooked. I had to take the thing apart to get the brass out of the shell holder, which messed up the brass rim.

Do I have a mismatch in parts, or more likely doing something wrong?

I imagine one tray is for Small Primers, (.38/.357 & .223) and the other one is for Large Primers. (44, .45 ACP, 6mm rem, .270, .308 AND .45 Colt).

Sounds to me like you have been using the wrong tray, at least most of the time.

You'll find a Hornady shell holder is a little better fit than the RCBS. From my experience, the primer pocket on new Starline brass is a little on the tight side and you putting enough force to seat the primer that the case pushes out of the loose fitting RCBS shell holder.
