I am wanting to push a Hornady 250 XTP at approx. 1000fps from my Ruger SRH 7.5" and look like to use either HS6 or Universal Clay as I have plenty of these. If this isn't possible I also have some 300 gr. hard cast lead that I want to push to the same velocity +/- 100fps and also have W296 available. I don't own a chrono. and haven't found any manuals for reference. Thanks

I really like Lymans manual,they give loads for rugers as well as mild loads for "other" guns.

Lyman 48th says that a 250 grain out of a 7.5 barrel will still be a touch under the 1K mark (900-930) with Maximum loads.

Look at the Ruger/Contender loads and you shouldn't have a problem getting 1,000 fps or more if you want with WW296. Using Universal Clays, you will have to go where no loading manual lists. A load of 9 grains of Universal Clays under a 250-grain bullet and WLP primers will get you a little more than 900 fps. Universal is usually listed only for light loads, read SAA loads, but there some people that load it similar to Unique. So, if you really want to hotrod use WW296, H110, 2400, Lil’Gun, or something along those lines. As a side note I have started using Lil’Gun and it is really working out well.

The Ruger SuperRedhawk is one very strong gun, especially the 454 in Carpenter 465-series steel.
So I must assume use of 45 Colt cases in the 454 chambering, oui?
Okay, use Starline cases.
Finish with a heavy crimp using a Redding Profile Crimp die.
The 250g XTP-HP is listed by Hornady as a "800-1600fps" bullet; good.
Suggest Federal or CCI primers, whether Magnum or not.
So now we got all the stuff we need, right (chrono? safety glasses? luck?)
Powder...........Hornady thinks a WLP and around 15g of either AA9 (14.8) or 2400 (14.9) will get you about 1050fps; Hercules liked about 11.0g Unique; Vihtavuori says 10.9g N350 will get you there, or maybe some N340 to get you close.
Safe-pressure data includes: around 13-14.0g Blue Dot, 19ish of N110, 10-11ish Power Pistol, 12-13g 3N37, 14.0g HS6, 10.5g Universal Clays (from my notes -- "250g XTP-HP, Fed 150, 10.5g UC, new W-W case, OAL 1.587", 5.5" barrel gave 1016fps, ES = 34.4, SD = 14.6"), etc...........
Me? I'd skip that lightweight 250 and use AT LEAST a 300g slug no matter WHAT I was targeting (I like the 300g XTP; I love the 325g Swift; I prefer lead) over some N110, IF I wanted a 1000fps-type load.

WESHOOT2, I just wanted a good Whitetail round that I could use in my 454 SRH. I like the idea of the 300 gr. XTP... Should I go with their magnum offering or standard? Second question.... Would this round and appropriate loading of HS6 or Universal be too much for my S&W MG 625-9 . Thanks

Slow, another thing...
a Chrony or Pact chronograph will cost you between $100 and $150. If you reload, a chrono is one of the best BS suppressors you can buy.

just may be the best-kept secret in an all around powder for revolvers; I've been loading it in .357 & .44 mags lately, and it has proven quite accurate. It splits the power diffrence between Unique/Universal and H110/296 pretty well, with moderate charge weights and low pressures overall.
I'd avoid H110/296 for anything but full loads, and in your shoes I'd call Hodgdon and just ask how much HS6 I could use in that Ruger, with the bullet you want to load and the velocity you want to achieve. The powder companies are generally quite helpful in this regard.
