Can anyone recommend a 45 auto pistol for a women? She currently uses a 1911A1 but I wouldn't mind finding something a little smaller that didn't require her to use both hands for things like taking the safety off and releasing the slide.

I'm doing the same search for my wife. She likes the feel of the 1911 grip. She can activate the slide release and safety with one hand. We are thinking a commander size 1911 or compact 1911 (3.5" barrel) for her with an extended slide release. S&W commander, Kimber Ultra Carry, Wilson KZ45 compact are good options as well as Para's. Her biggest issue is where to carry, IWB or SOB. Given her body shape, SOB is looking the most comfortable. Still working on that one...the best thing is our wives are invovlved with shooting. It makes things a little nicer around the house.:)

The new Kahr P45 got a good review in a gun mag I read recently. They said it's a smooth shooter, like pretty much all Kahrs, and it's lighter than any mini-1911s I've seen at only 20.5 oz. loaded. At only 6.3 inches long and 4.8 inches high overall, it's also definitely concealable.

Mark(psycho)Phipps( HAHAHA! )

My wife chose a S&W 457 as her pistol. It is a compact alloy-framed gun availabel for a good price. I sent hers to S&W to be converted to DAO and have the action tuned, then I put some reduced-power Wolff springs in it. I also replaced the plastic factory grip with a Hogue rubber grip. Coming from a 1911 user, that is one sweet-shooting double action pistol. In fact, it's just about perfect according to my wife.

+1 on the Taurus, but if the PT145 grip feels too thick to her, check out the PT745,same gun,but single stack with a much thinner grip...

My wife has a S&W 5" 1911, a Rock Island Armory 1911A1, and a S&W 4566. Of all of these, she prefers her S&W 1911, but likes shooting the RIA. The 4566, despite being similar to her 5903 and 669, is a little larger in the grip than she prefers. She really likes my Colt LW Commander with 4.25" barrel and wants one this size for herself (she's looking into the S&W Commander-sized pistols). She likes shooting my Colt Officers ACP, too. Just let her try a bunch of different guns until she picks one out that she likes the feel of.

My Mom shoots and carries a S&W 1911SC (Scandium frame, commander size). The SC weight difference to her is a big plus, and she doesn't have any problems operating it. Also, you can get slightly lower profile grips for the 1911 if grip size is a problem.

Needing two hands to release the slide shouldn't really matter since if she needs to reload, I bet she's already dropped what was in her other hand. ;)

I've shot the SC, and it has only slightly more snap than my Combat Commander.

Your best bet is to take her to a gun show and have her pickup every 45 in the place and see what feels good.

Worth a look -

The H&K USP45C is a soft [as .45's go] shooter, +P rated, accurate, reliable, & light - 26 oz. (empty). It's a bit pricey and sort of blocky, but concealable enough. The V1 will let you carry cocked & locked, condition three, and offers the security of an external safety/decocker if one so desires.

I'm looking to pick up a Taurus Milpro PT-145 this week. It just feels good, and is more concealable than what I currently have. Not sure if my wife will be able to deal with the recoil but I'm sure she'll like the feel of it.

See if you can find a CCO sized 1911 for her to try.

Officer's frame and Commander slide.

Think of it as a 7/8's scale Govt. Model.

I shot the Kahr .45 and my wrist got sore. It has a strange recoil, IMHO. Just get your wife a GLOCK 30 if you want a simple and reliable .45 for her without a bunch of safeties on it. My wife shoots a G26 and she likes it because it's very simple.

I don't know your wife's tolerance for recoil, but for a fact - the PT145 just doesn't have that much recoil.

My wife likes shooting mine more than she likes shooting my FN Hi-Power, which is 9mm vs .45 and about 8 or so ounces heavier to boot.

The PT145 is a pussycat to shoot.

:D

Meef,

Thanks for your input it's nice to hear. My wife loves to shoot my P95 so I'm hoping she feels the same about the PT145. I'd like to get her comfortable with a larger caliber. I'm looking to get her a ccw permit and would like to see her comfortable carrying anything from .380 to .45 and be able to leave it to her personal preferance.

If she is used to the power of the 45 I would probably go for the Kimber Ultra. In my humble opinion Kimber is were it is at for factory 45's,

Good Luck

What is it about shooters that attracts women who can't think for themselves?

There's only one answer to this question, and it may or may not be a .45. It may or may not be a handgun.

It may or may not be what you want to hear.

Sometimes, the men on this forum embarrass me...

Hmmm... let's look at the initial post:

this info pretty much tells the reader that what the woman in question already uses is a handgun, and .45 to boot.

but I wouldn't mind finding something a little smaller that didn't require her to use both hands for things like taking the safety off and releasing the slide.
Which indicates that she may be having trouble with the size of the 1911A she's shooting with (some men and many women have small hands, and find the ergonomics of full-sized guns awkward), and may be looking for a better fit in the same caliber.

And the poster (who is apparently lording over this browbeaten and hapless woman in your opinion) is here asking input about it from us because he doesn't know it all and isn't afraid to ask for assistance to save this woman some legwork on finding a more comfortable gun.

 right back in your court...

:p
