Hey High Roaders, I lurk on here and soak up information for the most part, don't post very often. I've recently acquired a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in 45LC/45ACP, and am ready to start loading up some LC ammo for it.
Anybody have experience using Longshot powder under 250gr lead boolits? Neither my Lyman or Nosler manuals have data for this powder in any 45LC loads. Hodgdon's data center has Longshot listed under "Ruger Only" loads, but only with jacketed bullets. My understanding is that Longshot runs a bit slower than HS6 and faster than H110...so I would think it'd be fine for this cartridge.

Thoughts on a starting load?

It's actually a tad faster than HS6.
Think of it as an improved, spherical version of Unique.
It has a better pressure curve than either WSF or HS6 for many handgun applications.

It produces excellent 9mm and .40S&W ammo, but these operate at much higher pressures than does the .45colt.

If it were readily suitable to the .45colt, Hodgdon would have data for it.
Try it if you like, but I'd suggest starting with "Universal" data as it is a bit faster burning and discontinue if you see large amounts of unburned powder....
Better yet, contact Hodgdon by e-mail and find out what they say... They market it and obviously know more about it than most anyone else.

It's actually published in Hogdon reloading pages as being for Ruger / TC loads. It operates in those pressures and is a slower burning powder in 45 LC than HS6 which operates at less than half the peak pressure. The load range for a 250 gr. XTP is 12.0 grs. to 13.4 grs. with test velocity up into the mid 1200's fps..

I have personally loaded with it in a SBH, and have as well used the HS6. I found Longshot much better performing than HS6, and not nearly as position sensitive as HS6 in this application. With HS6 I had to use dacron to eliminate that issue.
