Well, I don't own lesser guns. The only .45 colts I own are TC contender and Blackhawk. I'll let you guys pay the big bucks for fragile Smiths and Colts.
Actually, my Colt New Service, while not up to the Blackhawk for strength, will easily drive a 255 grain bullet to around 1100 fps -- and that's really all you need.

Well, the colts look better and the smiths are available in .44 if you need power. But, I still prefer Ruger strength and versatility for a field gun. I'd like to own a COLT, a real one. But, I'll pass on the replicas. I don't do CAS, but a real Colt SAA would be a neat gun to just own and shoot. I mean, I did grow up on TV westerns.:D I could always get it in .44-40 so I didn't mess up and put a Ruger load in it.

If you like the 5.5'', you could look around on gunbroker for an Acusport Bisley. Here's mine back when it was still all stock.

And here's a review on Handloader.

Cast bullets under slow powders are as good as it gets. I personally find 255-300 grain cast loads at 1100-1200 fps a nice balance between recoil and performance. In particular, a 300 grain cast bullet under 20-21 grains of LiL Gun will get around 1200 fps, and go broadside through pretty much anything on the contintent. For lighter shooting hunting loads, try 20-22 grains of Lil Gun under cast bullets in the 250-265 grain range. A couple of good reads are Taffin's LiL Gun article, and if you are interested in pushing some serious heavies, take a look at the heavy bullets in the .45 article on Handloader.

Particularly good are the LBT style bullets from Beartooth, Montana Bullet Works, and Cast Performance.

I would agree with others here that higher-end standard pressure loads will most likely do the job. I don't have a handgun in 45Colt (yet), but the Ruger/TC load that I sometimes shoot out of my 24" Rossi carbine hurts after about three shots (steel buttplate). I use a 250gr XTP over H110 but stay in the lower end (and even just below) of the published "Ruger/TC" loads for 45 Colt.

Just shot three of these out of my 8 pound Rossi this past weekend at the range and still have the bruise to prove it. I can't imagine shooting them out of a 2.5# handgun. Either I'm a wimp, or that's gotta be obnoxious :D .
