Hi
I'm a fan of .45 Super. I fire it out of two 1911's timed for it.
Currently I've got it loaded with 230 Grain Buffalobore JHP's, at 1100 fps.

I'm considering buying more ammunition for it.
Problem with .45 Super right now is the only person that seems to load for it is Buffalobore.
I like Truncated cone bullets. They offer this:
230 grains at 1100 fps.
www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=79

Now, while the smallest guy that ever attacked me was 240-250 pounds, I wonder if that isn't a bit of overkill, penetration wise? It would be fine in the house, but, in an urban setting it could go a long way.

They also have a 255 grain Hardcast that would do even more of the same.

The ones that I am thinking of trying are the 185 grain, 1300 fps loads, and maybe the old standby,
the 200 grains at 1200 fps. This was the load Detonics settled on as the best compromise for LEO.

Now I would love to see a 185 grain Truncated cone, going 1350 fps or so, but, they don't offer that.

Still, the 185's give you 10MM ballistics.

Another issue is what about buying a Glock 29 and converting it to .45 Super?
Anyone done that?
I like the heavier slide on the 10MM, since it's actually designed for this level loads. If so, who's barrel do you use, and what does it take to make it work?

I am a fan of the .45 Super on paper(haven't had the pleasure of shooting it yet). I love the idea of bringing an old standby caliber into modern times.
Now, if I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about over-penetration. That's just me, but I think that using 185 grains at that speed would just feel too much like a 10mm to me to be fun.

Prosser,

I am interested in using .45 super in a 1911 platform; could you tell me how you adjusted the timing of your pistol?

Thanks,
Robert

Personally I wouldn't want to use a solid bullet for people defense. If you like a lot of penetration, the XTP bullets do very well in that arena and have a strong reputation for accuracy.

Seems like quite a handful, but fun!

Does the .45 Super barrel fit through the barrel window of the G29 slide? Or would you have to have the opening milled larger? Would .45 cartridge fit in the breecch, and will the extracter work?

I see G29 conversion barrels available in .40 and .357, not .45.

That sized bullet,185 grain TC, at 1350 fps, is likely to mushroom a bit on impact. Limits penetration.

JRH Advanced Gunsmithing can setup 1911's so the gun stays locked longer after firing. Some guns, Detonics in particular, seem to have been setup from the factory that way.

Thanks LH:
Wasn't up on what calibers work. Only gun priced at a decent price in our local gunshop is a 29.

You could always order a 30 slide and mags separately, then you'd have a 30/Super and a regular 29.

Are they jacketed truncated cones? If so, I'm not sure I'd expect them to deform much without hitting some heavy bone.
