I should think a tang-mounted peep with a minimal aperture would go a long way to helping your eyes out.
The trigger assembly can be made every bit as good as a vintage Winchester (excluding the broken-in factor) with a bit of be-burring and stoning. I had an AE .44 (FOOL to sell that one!) with a trigger assembly that came right 'round with about 2.5 hours of attention including disassembly and reassembly. A Marbles tang sight sharpened the sight picture right up. I don't remember the aperture size I settled on but it was remarkably small and very easy to look around.
