Ok i have been reloading and shooting .454 casull in a ruger srh for a couple months now ! Today i bought a copy of the Speer reloading manual #13 ! I noticed that all the Colt .45 and .454 Casull loads recomend .451 diameter bullets ? Every other load manual I have says to use .452 for casull and colt loads ! What gives ? There seems to be a lot more bullet choices in .451 than .452 ! I always thought the .451 bullets were for .45 ACP .:banghead:

i'm not an expert on either of those calibers, but it may be that .451 is for jacketed and .452 is for lead. i'm fairly certain that is the case for 45acp. (i.e. i shoot .451 jacketed bullets and .452 L-SWC in my 45acp loads)

Super Reds shoot .452 just fine. Mine sure does. Most of the factory bullets offered are .452. (well, most of the ones I use anyways) I've read that some of the earlier Freedom Arms were very tight and did better with .451, but to my knowledge this has never been the case with the Rugers.

I think your biggest issue with .454 is the jacket thickness, to thin and you could get seperations if pushed to fast. Other then that I've used .451 & .452 diameter w/o any problems.

Hornady's jacketed 45 bullets are .452. Everyone else makes .451.

Either size will work fine. All cast bullets will be .452.

Or .454".

Many older Colts & S&W's in .45 Colt had oversize cylinder throats, and/or bores.

Many commersial cast bullet makers offer bullets sized 452" and .454" so you can choose the one that best fits your gun.

Thanks again folks !for now i am gonna stick with .452 if I can scounge a few .451s i may try them ! but my ruger does seem to like .452 ! i have noticed that it seems to like 250 grain or greater weight bullets also ! I have some 300 grain JHP coming my way ! AI tried some cowboy .45 colts that were all over the paper ! i reloaded the cases with 200 grn masterblasters and found I had to push the velocity up into the Ruger and T/C only range and the groups tightened back up !but not as good as the 250 grain jhp!

You were cherry-picking :neener:, taliv, and only picked 45acp bullets.

The topic was NOT 45acp bullets.

I only reload Hornady 240 & 300 gr XTP/MAG in my .454 and .460. They shoot just fine out of my S&W XVR. Both are .452
Ditto what another poster said - you want a thicker jacket. The MAG in the Hornady name implies this.

Thanks ! Eddie and Cheesmaker ! you guys helped me a lot when i was getting started ! looks like you still are !! Thanks !:D I ordered some Hornady 300 grain from midway ! they are .452 !
