OK, part of today's ''grin factor'' was pickin up the SRH in .454 .. which should replace the ''Raging Lunatic'' when, and if, I can force myself to move it on!:p

Now Diesle mentioned that he had had his ''done'' by Magna-Port .. saying it is a bear without that. I am not sure yet .. the ''Lunatic'' has some porting but judging from my muzzle flash pic other week ... doubt that makes such a huge difference ... and i can handle that OK with hot stuff.

However ... it is something worthy of consideration and so ... input appreciated. Possible costs too. Never used Magna-Port b4.

Diesle ... anyone??:)

Id be jealous if I didn’t already have one....

My first "hunting' revolver was a 6" GP-100. I was green as hell and wanted to have a gun of all trades. The GP was the every-gun for about a year. That was then.....

I had this gem for the last year and was just eager to get out in the field with it and see just how very capable it can be. I never go the opportunity this year with it but will keep trying. I do know that I can put 5 or 6 into a 3" group at 100 yards with it.

This is a Super Red Hawk in .454 with the long barrel. I think it started out at 9.5" and is now 11 something.... ruler is not handy. I use the GP-100 grip inserts cause I think their pretty. Well, truth be told, I think this whole damn setup is pretty.... I have an Aimpoint 5000 mounted using a Weigand Combat rail for these pics. I’ve switched between the 5000 and a 2x 7000 on it. When I first got it I attempted to use a Burris fixed 4x scope but found target aquasition time to be unacceptable. I think that was my fault. Anyhow, Ill sacrifice the zoom for a quick dot picture.

After I had first shot this gun I seriously considered trading it off. The jump is one thing, but the concussion was a whole nother... it felt like you were punched in the nose every time you shot it. And that was with my arms as far out as they could. I ended up sticking with it and decided to send it to Magna-Port for their Magna-Brake installation. The brake is bead blasted so I went ahead and had them blast off the target grey so the finish would match. They did a fine job matching the finish.

Basically, they cut the barrel just behind the front blade, threaded it to accommodate the brake and screwed on the brake. They send a brake tightening tool and thread protector with it.

Both recoil and rearward concussion have been significantly reduced. Now its pretty and shootable. I find that I can be less worried about what is about to happen to me and more focused on a good shot.

I have no idea what I sacrificed in performance. But with good .454 loads at less than 100 yards, who cares.

I really don’t know if it possible to barter with Magna. I tried and got nowhere. Spent ~$300 for the whole job. I’m quite satisfied with it. I really think its the absolute real deal in hunting handguns. The bottom line.

Jabbering and gloating done.........
