First, brief range report .....

Despite my boy getting over a bit late into the pm ... we did get out to the range. He mainly wanted to check his 7mm mag, pre hunting .... but with ''formalities'' out the way .. we settled to some varied recreational shooting.

Had Contender .223's gettin in the black mostly, at 100 yds ... well satisfying. Some new .44 mag loads (18.8 H-110) with 300 grn XTP's were checked out ... they'll work for hunting! Enjoyed a few .454 shots, and plenty of 7.62x39 got put down range thru SKS and SAR1 ...... oh and .380, .45acp, .357 mag . etc!!

Ok ... still here? You know I ramble .... :p

Light went fast and I'd taken digi cam so ... thought at end, once almost cleared up and getting pretty dark ... let's get some muzzle flash pics. Tried several with the .44 mag (tho with my cast bullet 2400 loads) .... and was amazed at how minimal was the flash .... see pics. Just dull orange. Maybe the H-110 in the XTP loads would have worked better, but with the price of those bullets .... hell no! Tried CZ-52 also .... but hard to register that flash very well.

BUT ... and here we go ... the ''piéce de resistance'' ...... worth the wait ... honest!! The .454 Raging Lunatic .. oh man, did that ever light things up ..... just had to share that pic!! Hornady ammo .... not sure but i think they must fuel that baby with ANFO ... maybe some kerosine added too .... enjoy.

How'd you get the last one so good and clear? Is that a still off moving pictures, or you setup a multi-shot burst on your camera?

If you have the metadata of the file showing f-stop and shutter speed, etc., could you post that?

That pic is my desktop now....heh.

Glad ya like that pic Kami' ..... that one is reduced .. do ya want a higher res' version .... just let me know and I'll email ya one.

Bit of luck I reckon but - here's what i tried ...

Camera is Kodak 3.1 Mp, EasyShare DX6340. I used the option they call ''PAS'' . in essence that's a setting mode where the flash is out of the frame ... and you can set up shutter priority, aperture priority plus go up or down two stops as well.

It didn't want to take the shots . red LED flashing away but .. hell, ignore that!:p IIRC the settings were ....... aperture was max at f2.8 ... and I set time for shutter at 1 second ... the idea being that my son shouted ''go'' as he fired off .. and I almost immediately fired the gun ...... that was basically it... same with Super Redhawk. So - single shot - time exposure.

We tried a few on 1/2 sec but somehow couldn't get the goods.

This one was surprising (and oh so delightful to capture!!) .... in as much as, the main light output seems to have allowed for minimal blur . even tho the gun ''took off'' upwards of course just after. Even the .44 shots too were pretty blur free.

Luck of the devil I reckon but - hey I ain't compainin!!:)

P95,
Is that last photo the .454 Ruger? If so very impressive flash, something that would look especially cool on an indoor pistol range. I have been weighing the need to add a .454 SRH to my collection. Would you highly recommend?

UMC ... sorry to disappoint, no the Super Redhawk was the one poopin off the 2400 loads .. very orange flash.

The real flasher - :p - was the Taurus .454 Raging ''Lunatic'' :D .

I have to say i am well pleased with that, tho the scope eye relief is very critical. I may fit a Millet red dot to that ... same as I have on the 9 1/2 inch SRH. That has 6" tube tho the final inch you see is a sorta ''shroud'' with the porting .. you can see some of the gas escape coming upwards thru those vent holes.

Discharge from cylinder area is amazing I reckon ... despite fact the cyl gap is very modest. Still ... that's an awful lot of gas to get into the tube awful quick. Just surprised too how yellow and light color the flash was.

Forgot to add ... well I can't, per se, recommend the SRH in .454 but, loving the .44 as much as i do I'd still say yeah probably ... just happens I bought the Taurus in a weak moment when I saw it in my local gun shop ... so for now .... that one'll have to suffice for that cal!

Wow! That is cool!

I have a Dan Wesson .357 Mag revolver and the flash is very evident when I shoot that thing as well, but I've never shot it at night.

Great pics!

OK! OK! OK! OK! OK!

I concede!!:D

Man, is that ever a shock wave!!!

Mind you .. those guys are burnin up more propellant in that one dose ... than I would, or could use ...... in 100 lifetimes!!!:p

That is child's play.
Did you see the amateur video tape of the explosion of the PepCon plant in Henderson Nevada filmed from Black Mountain ?

The blast blew the windshilds out of the fire trucks from miles away.

Granted, I guess it isn't muzzle blast, but if we are going to include battleships I submit that we can include explosions/industrial accidents. :D

Great Muzzel Blast the Taurus!!!!

But how in the world does the scope survive? :what: Looking at that hi-res pic, the scope is litterally engulfed in flame.
Must be one tough scope!!!
~Or~, do you replace it with every new box of ammo? :D

Must be one tough scope!!!
Incredibly - the scope (Bushnell) shows hardly any surface deposits ... when cleaning the gun, the black of the scope is shiny like new! Surprising tho eh I agree.

In fact the flame/gas cloud, is such a transitory event that I guess the deposition of any combustion products is all but minimal ..... inspection pretty much shows that.

Gotta say, I am still amazed at the pic ..... just fortunate it came out so well ...... and not even sure i could repeat it, tho .... may have to try again sometime. The ideal method of set-up would be a sound actuated trigger for camera ... with a coupla milliseconds delay probably to let the fireball get big enough.

A max load of Blue Dot behind a 125gr JHP is just PHENOMENAL for the flash. It'll singe the hair off your knuckles.:what:

Edited to add: In a .357 mag case, 4" revo. Simply amazing.
