How accurate are conical bullets in a cap n ball pistol? I have a mold that makes .454 197gr semi wad cutter bullets. Or are round balls better.
Thanks....................

I have had good luck with conicals I've molded myself. They tend to be less accurate because they might get canted in the chamber as they're loaded.
If you own Pietta guns be careful. The plunger on their guns is usually milled out in a concave shape for round balls and I learned the hard way they mash conicals.
Ubertis usually have a plunger milled for conicals that work for both, but even some of them have a concave base on the plunger.
I've never used semi wadcutters in a cap'n'ball, so what your will do .... the only way to know is to test.
Use pure lead, not alloyed with antimony or anything. It needs to be softer than modern ammo.

I use maxiballs that I pour a lot for target shooting and hunting and canting has always been a problem even with the long guns. The problem was important enough for TC to come out with what they called "QLA" barrels, the muzzle was unrifled for less than an inch to allow for better aligning.
As I've written "You can cant a conical but you can't cant a roundball."

I've always preferred the round ball. Probably comes from reading too much Elmer Keith.

I have tried various conicals and the ones that did the best for me were the light weights with a gas check shank on them. It made seating them easier.

Also had some good luck with the Lee HP conicals, probably because odf the lighter weight.

The next one I am going to try is the collar button bullet for 45-70 gallery loads.

Here's what it looks like.

It weighs 145 grains.

i dont know i keep looking at the pic. but that huge gap has me concerned about getting a good seal for one. if you try it let me know how it comes out.

My only concern is getting them to seat straight.

Two rings of lead will keep things tight.

And the groove will be filled with lube.

The bullet casts at .460 so I may size it prior to loading to a smaller caliber.
