Has anyone tried the Lee conical bullet mold for the Ruger Old Army? Is this a good bullet, or would I be better off shooting round balls?

I know a conical will give higher muzzle energy, but round ball is deadly totally out of proportion to its energy level, and I can't legally hunt with a cap'n ball revolver in this state anyway. Are the conicals more or less accurate than round balls? And are they easier to cast?

Does the Lee conical bullet have any use for loading .45LC black powder cartridges?

I'm don't shoot my ROA all that much, but I'm getting low on Speer round balls, and I need to pad my Cabela's order a little to qualify for a $15 rebate...

Conicals In Ruger Old Army

Unless your planning on hunting with your Ruger, round balls are the best choice for paper punching...In fact ,a good friend of mine won at Friendship with 12gr of fffg, cornmeal filler on top, just enough to seat the ball about 1/8" below the cylinder face, then lube to keep fowling under control. If you do shoot any kind of lead bullets, you must make sure they are started in straight, or you will have holes all over the place. Good luck:evil:

This particular bullet is designed to start straight in the ROA. But I believe I'll order the Lee .457 round ball mold instead. Thanks.

The Lee conical is a wonderful design. I pan lubed about 200 of them last spring and they all worked flawlessly in my Rem (Pietta) 58 revolvers.

Well, the lube groves are a bit light compared to what you get with a lube cookie/pill or filling the cylinder cavity with crisco.

Lee conicals shoot a bit lower than round balls.

Round balls

You will almost certainly have more accurate results with roundballs.
I shot Lee conicals in a Walker, Dragoon and an original R&S.
Best results in the Walker with it's fastest twist.
They shoot higher than roundballs because of the larger recoil
