Gentlemen,

I am in need of your assistance:

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454, and am using the factory mounts. I have on it a Bushnell 2x6x32 scope and last night noticed it was "shaved" by a couple of layers - about a half inch back towards the adjustment caps. Then I noticed the mounts were loose at the base.

I took it all off and have a Jack Weiland scope mount - should I install it or re-install the old mounts and use a generous amount of lock-tite?

Also the scope now has three "specks" inside the scope - I've cleaned the outside lenses and they are still there - so it must be on the inside. New scope time or don't worry about it?

Thanks in advance.

I would probably put the Wiegland mount on. Doesn't it use 3 rings if you want? I had problems with the factory mounts on my 480 with a heavy scope. I think with three rings, you will notice a difference in the scope hold. I have a set of Leupold mounts for my Freedom Arms 454 and am now looking to buy a SSK TSOB mount where I can use three rings and have the scope mounted slightly closer to the gun. Good luck with it.

Actually Zeus, I have the exact mount you're talking about - got it with 30mm rings. Was going to use a red dot scope at first - then changed my mind when I mounted it. The Weigland mount would look alot better on a 9 1/2" bbl than it does on my 7 1/2" bbl.

Going to try and see it a fair amount of lock tite will hold it together without stripping anymore metal off. I've put 120 rounds of magtech and winchester through it with no lock tite, so maybe with the lock tite it will hold up better.

Still deciding if I want a different scope - the "specks" are tiny and I might stay with it or find another - do you think Bushnell would open it up and clean it?

Maybe have all rings mounted down tight then have the rings lapped to hopefully reduce pressure points and displace the forces more evenly.

I'd send the scope back. The "specks" you see may be indicative of greater problems to come. It sounds like some sort of inside coating falling off.

Take the scope and rings off. Remount the scope rings to the base using BLUE locktite. Use a ring lapping rod and some jeweler's rouge until you have full contact between the scope and the rings. Before setting the scope into the rings apply a layer thin adhesive tape to the top of the scope tube. Trim so the tape layer fits the rings exactly. Reinstall the ring caps and tighten the cap screws evenly by rotating tightening pressure to all the screws equally.
I have used this method to install scopes on T/C Contenders with 45-70 barrels and have never had one slip.

4v50 Gary,

I am thinking about sending it back - the specks look like coating. Maybe a new scope - any recommendations? Nikon or Leupold maybe?

RiddleofSteel,

Why BLUE? I use the red most of the time, tried the polish and tape - going to shoot Wednesday - just got the Hornady 260gr and 300gr XTPs in from the MCX, at $20 and $22 a box - if I like them I'm going to stick to ordering those.

I still have (2) boxes of Winchester 260gr and (9) boxes of Winchester 250gr left. 250gr is HP - I was grabbing all the ammo I could get my hands on - it seems to be in short supply around here - is it that popular????
