Just incase anyone is wondering I got some good info back from Hornady regarding the velocity and performance of these bullets.
I had issues on two whitetail deer where the bullet didnt exit or didnt cause the kind of damage one would expect from a 300gr Hornady HP. I was only pushing them at 1500-1600fps per the book. It got me wondering so I emailed Hornady last week and asked what the minimum muzzle velocity should be for their .458 300gr XTP? Hornady responded within a day and stated the minimum velocity for the bullet to perform as expected would be 1600fps but they recommend more velocity to obtain consistent performance. I heard rumors about .430 240gr XTP not working well on deer so last year I worked up a load to near max of IMR 4227, mag primer and 240gr XTP. My buddy shot a nice size whitetail a hair over 50yards with it and the exit hole was about 2-3'' in diameter and sent the heart into tiny pieces. He claims to have seen the impact because it did hit bone but it drilled all the way through and out the other side. I guess these Hornady bullets need to be pushed fast to do good.
