I have a question about bullet penetration.
I was thinking of loading up a 300 grain load in my .44 magnum rifle (24" barrel) in order to get more penetration on tougher animals like wild hogs. I currently shoot the 240grain XTP at 1825fps, my deer load.
Shooting a lighter bullet, I obviously can get more velocity and energy. How can I tell what the threshold of penetration would be in velocity where a 240gr XTP and 300gr XTP bullet would be the same. Given that these bullets are the same construction and diameter I would think there is a way to calculate this (impact)velocity.
For example, I shoot the 240gr XTP at 1825fps. In order to get the same penetration with the 300gr bullet I have to shoot it to greater than XXXXfps. How do I calculate the velocity that will give the same penetration for a different weight bullet? (or is it much more complicated than that since they will expand at different rates since the impact velocity is different)
Is it just the ratio of the SD (.185*1825fps/.232=1455fps)?
XTP Numbers:
200gr XTP @2150fps, 2053ft-lbs
Sectional Density: 0.155
240gr XTP @1825fps, 1775ft-lbs
Sectional Density: 0.185
300gr XTP @1500fps, 1499ft-lbs
Sectional Density: 0.232
