I just put together my 458 build for hunting bear/deer on admiralty island up here in alaska and was looking for a scope that had decent eye relief, and that i could shoot with both eyes open quickly. The shots here would be 100 yards at the very outside to around 20-40 on average.

So far in my online searching i have discovered the Mueller Speed Shot 1-4x scope and it seems to b e in my price range and get good reviews.

Is this the scope for me or is there one im missing that may cost a little more money but is a better value?

I own a mueller 4.5x14 and its been great so far. just looking for a brush gun that i can use to take with me when out hunting/being hunted on brown bear island :p

I have used the aimpoint comp III and Nightforce 1-4x on mine and like them both. The aimpoint might be better at 20-40 yards, at least you won't pull the rifle up only to find you left it on 4x and have to "hunt" even though it's right in front of you.

Both of those seem to be a little more than id like to spend with my budget.

I have been looking and might go with the Leopold VX-HOG as it is about 8 oz lighter though it doesnt have an illuminated reticle. Thoughts?

I am a huge fan of the Leupold 2.5x scout scope. Lots of eye relief and plenty of magnification for what you want. Also you can mount it more forward and avoid scope bite.
