.458 Win Mag

Gizmo99 brought some rounds down to the hunting cabin yesterday for me to fire through my last acquisition-a BRNO 602 in .458 Win Mag. It thumps pretty good but is not nearly the beast I was anticipating.

On the other hand, it won't be my plinking rifle, either.

Man, the 375 H&H is the most I've been man enough to attempt to shoot. The owner swears that the lighter loads in 458 aren't much worse recoil-wise but the 458 and 460 Weatherby still scare me.

Maybe next year... or next next year.

A factory 500 grain 458 is a good third to a half again harder kick than ye olde 375 H&H factory.

That .458 was one of the nicest rifles I've ever shot. I had a Ruger 77 in .458 that was both hard kicking and liked to spit the magazines contents on my shoes during the first shot.

The Czech holds five rounds in the magazine, has a set trigger and a very well designed stock.

There's one on my list for the future. If anybody is thinking of a heavy, you'd make a mistake in passing up this model.

FYI - the ammo was Remington 510 grain softpoints, clocked them at 1950 fps in my '77. Gizmo99 was my TFL handle.

The cabin is in eastern Georgia...but I have dreams of Africa. If I ever make it there, I won't be one the folks who can't use their rifle. Hope that makes sense.

My pint-sized (150 lb-ish. Al is over 200, and Byron is over 250) rear put a round downrange from the BRNO, as well. While not really "enjoyable", from standing, recoil was not painful.

Al and Byron accused my undergarments of being lace-adorned.

That evening, I realized the point of my chin was sore. It was evidently whacked by the bottom of the stock. It still hurts today.

A couple of years ago I shot a 458 and a 375 and was able to get a good comparison. To be honest I was a little apprehensive about shooting the 458win mag but I was suprised. The recoil was not as horrible as I expected. While very stout, I think I could definitely, with practice become proficient with it. The 375 is definitely a step down in recoil. It is more pleasant to shoot, although that is relative! I am thinking about getting a 458 for myself just so I can say I have one

Guys: I've owned and shot both .375 and .458 Mags, but I have lately wondered how the recoil of these two compare to a .338 Lapua. Anybody have an idea?

My question was in jest! If a man wants to hunt cottontails with a double barrel .577 Nitro, more power to him. Use, and shoot whatever you like. I've been known to shoot Rocky Mountain Mulies with a .375 H&H when a .243 would have been adequate.

As I get older, I tend to shoot softer recoiling rifles, but when I was young, I tried them all.

BTW: If you want to hunt Africa, you prolly oughta do it soon! The political situation over there sucks right now, and it gets worse by the day. Good Luck!!!!

My 458 definitely kicks less than my 375 Ultra Mag and the ammo is cheaper too.
