Ten-hut acted like I was crazy for wanting to shoot .45acp 230 grain out of a 3" 1911 kimber ultra. Does anyone concur?

I shoot 230gr FMJ and JHP out of my two 3" 1911s all the time. What was the stated reasoning behind thinking it was "crazy"? The 185gr loads usually shoot lower than POA for me, and I prefer to stock the same rounds for all .45 pistols I own so I stick with 230gr.

He made the impression the recoil would be too harsh. I'm used to my 357 mag but it has a 6" barrel.

Crazy? Read your manual for your Kimber. For my UCC II they recomend 230 grain bullets though I use 185 grain XTPs.

I don't buy the notion that you should shoot lighter than normal bullets out of a short barrel. Most modern hollowpoints are designed to expand at a wide range of velocities. Also, when you shoot a light bullet out of a short barrel you are significantly decreasing the momentum of the bullet, which may significantly decrease penetration, depending on the bullet design. You also tend to get more muzzle flash from the lighter loads because the powder doesn't have as much time to burn. They also may give you a different point of impact than your standard practice load. I stick with one bullet weight no matter the barrel length.
I personally find the recoil of 230gr out of the 3" 1911s to be substantially less than a .357 out of my SP101. It is more than out of a 4" or 5" 1911, but with a high, firm grip it shouldn't be a big deal. It's no worse than a Glock 27 (.40) to me.

mine, with both strong and weak hands, and I'm pretty much average sized.
I use a Colt Defender and carry an STI Shadow with 1,000+ rounds through it in less than six months.

As you have seen you will get many opinions and none will be the same.
Out of a 3" 1911 id carry a 200gr +P round like the Ranger T-series or Fed HST.
Sometimes 100fps can make the difference in a bullet expanding or not expanding.
This is just me, But i like to see any ammo i shoot that is a JHP reach 1000fps for best expansion chances. One good thing is a non expanded 230gr bullet is still a big chunk of lead.
