Modifications to the gun are needed, too. Or an interchangeable cylinder, more common for single actions than double actions.

The answer is yes!!! (Takes a different cylinder for SAA or if a DA clips, possibly some gunsmithing)

I have a Colt 3rd Generation SAA in .45LC. Several years ago I sent it back to the Colt Custom Shop and had a .45 ACP cylinder fitted to the gun. Now I can shoot both, just change the cylinder. The .45 ACP is significantly cheaper and more available. Out of my gun it seems to be a little more accurate. I have never regretted having the additional cylinder fitted to the gun.

Ruger has made a few SA revolvers with 2 cylinders to shoot both loads. Colt had the option on their New Service Model for ages.

No that is completely incorrect, or at least not as simple as you are stating.

Since you are talking about moon clips, you have to be talking about double action revolvers. There is no double action revolver that lets you shoot 45 Colt as well as 45 ACP with moon clips through the same cylinder. The rim on the 45 Colt cartridge is not as thick as the moon clip and rim on 45 ACP, so the two are not compatible. To do what you describe would require you to have a 2nd cylinder set up strictly for 45 ACP.

For single action revolvers, you would need a 2nd cylinder also, but they do not use moon clips.

I don't recall the poster even saying what make and model gun he is taking about.

The industry standard pressure for the 45 ACP is 21,000 PSI and 23,000 PSI for the +P 45 ACP. The industry standard pressure for the 45 Colt is 14,000 PSI. Big difference in pressure IMO.

Their have been many 45 Colts made over the years some of questionable strength. It would be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to run many of them at 45 ACP pressures. Especially those with overally large chambers and non heat treated cylinders.

This is a yes and no situation. The Ruger blackhawk 45LC was available with a conversion cylinder for 45acp. The pressure differential was of no concern at all as the Ruger blackhawk is capable of 40,000 psi as evidenced by articles in the handloader magazine many years ago with loads approaching 44magnum levels and tested by HP White laboratories. Other 45LC revolvers such as early colts and imported models may or may NOT be able to stand the increase in pressure safely.

There are gunsmiths who will cut a .45 Colt cylinder from a double action revolver to take ACPs on clips and still retain the ability to shoot the original .45 Colt. No cylinder replacement required.

Most reproductions of SAA have been available with .45 ACP cylinders for some time.
The higher pressure of the ACP is not a strain on anything with reasonably modern metalurgy. Like since 1917.

The old Christy outfit sold .45 ACP cylinders you could put in any vintage .45 Colt SA you thought could handle it. But that was before there was the Internet to warn you against doing stuff with your own gun.

.45ACP in moonclips matches the thickness of the .45 AutoRim cartridge. The .45 Long Colt rim is much thinner. If a .45 Auto Rim or .45 ACP were loaded in a .45 Long Colt. I would expect the cylinder to bind up.

I can tell you from experience that a double action revolver chambered for .45 Colt will NOT accept moon clipped .45 ACP ammunition(don't ask, Gander Mountain's "certified gunsmith" stuff is a crock). Since the .45 Autorim cartridge was designed to eliminate the necessity of moon clips, it also will NOT work in a .45 Colt revolver.

As has already been stated, custom gunsmiths can recess a .45 Colt cylinder so that it will accept moon clipped .45 ACP and still fire .45 Colt.

Single actions are a different story and, as stated, a second cylinder is required.
