There seems to be vry little info for N110 in the 45 colt(heavy frame). Im looking for some tested and safe loads for 250, 270 graain cast bullets. Can anyone help?

Somewhere I have a VV load book, and I think it has .45 Colt data for Ruger/TC/Anaconda that uses N-110 powder, but I don't have a copy here (not sure if I can even find it when I get home)

As a rule of thumb, if there's .44 Magnum load data available for a powder, it will work in .45 Colt +P, and the load data will be similar. (and I still have both my thumbs)

VihtaVuori N-110 is too slow for .45Colt. You need N-320, -330, -340,-350 powders.

If you look at the chart I posted here ...

VV powder burn rate chart.

... you can see that N-110 has a very similar burn rate to H-110 and WW296, both of which are outstanding powders for the .45 Colt. I don't know why the Vihtavuori 2008 reloading manual doesn't list .45 Colt loads for the T/C and Ruger BH, RH and SRH :cuss: . They list N-110 loads for the .44 Magnum for bullets ranging from 180 all the way up to 300 grains!

John Linebaugh lists the following H-110 load:

260 grains cast (Min.) 25.5 gr 1364 fps 24,800 CUP (Max.) 27.0 gr 1459 fps 30,600 CUP

... so if N-110 is similar to H-110 in burn rate, 18 - 20 grains may be on the low side.

:)

Have run through all the data available and went with ZXCVbob's sugestion to use 44 data. Bigger bore shorter bullet for wgt seem fine. 20 gr with 255 cast and reg primer = very good accuracy and satisfying but not excessive recoil. 20.5 gr with same bullet =good accuracy but some leading. My old eyes can keep these on 11X14 sheet @ 100 yd. Maybe not too great in the macocosm, but impressed me. Thanks for the suggestions and input. I like the N110, will chronograph at later date.

A local gun shop has some VV N-110 powder at a good price so this is a powder I'm interested in using for .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. Let us know what kind of velocities you're getting from your .45 Colt loads since that could be very helpful in estimating case/cylinder pressure.

There isn't a lot of load data available for VV N-110 and the .45 Colt, however, I did manage to find these loads on Handloads.com.

240gr Sierra 22.0 gr N110 1,300 fps CCI350
(Full power with no signs of over-pressure. Should make a great hunting load.)

300gr LFP 18.0 gr VV-N110 1,100 fps Fed LP
(By comparing data from differen pwder manufacturers and looking at "relative burning rate" charts, and using a chronograph to check my loads, i was able to use this powder.start at 17 grs. velocity in 7,5" ruger bisley. for tc/ruger only.)

323gr LBT-LFN 20.0 gr Vihtavuori N110 1,309 fps Fed LPM
(The bullet used in this load is made by a Finnish manufacturer,Gunhill. It is a superhardcast with gascheck.Velocity is from 5.5in Ruger Bisley.)

325gr nei swc 18.5 gr VV N110 1,240 fps WLP
(Ruger Blackhawk/Redhawk, Dan Wesson, Colt Anaconda, Casull only. Powerfull load, enough to hunt any game in North America)

:)
