I am thinking about carrying my 7 1/2" ruger .480 and was wondering if that would be considered too much.

After looking at the velocity on the box of ammo I have I figured it might be ok since it has less velocity than most other handgun rounds.

Hornady Custom Ammunition 480 Ruger 400 Grain XTP Jacketed Hollow

Velocity on box shows as 1100fps at the muzzle.

By "carrying" do you mean "self defense"?

The .480 Ruger will sail broadside though a whitetail, possibly through both shoulder blades.

Don't let the "low" velocity fool you. 1100fps isn't as fast as a .357, but I wouldn't say "it has less velocity than most other handgun rounds."

If you want to carry a big bore, I'd look at a .45 Colt or a .44 SPL.

It may have less velocity, but it has a ton of momentum. I agree with kludge, .45 Colt or .44 Spl. if you want a big bore cartridge.

7 1/2 Ruger .480 for carry? Maybe in Alaska. Is this the same guy who wanted to know if his .50 cal semi-auto rifle was suitable for HD use? I can't help to think these posts are jokes.

Not really. Energy is equal to mass times velocity squared. That's velocity that's squared, not mass. So velocity is "more important."

Thats what I was just told...^^^^

but I still think that it is to much because for defense, that is a large gun and a large caliber. Also if you had to fire multiple shots...maybe you miss...you couldn't do that as quickly with something smaller because of the recoil.

Too much penetration. Heavy bullets keep going deeper and further.

Too much weight. You tried packing that thing around for any significant amount of time? You won't carry it everyday for long.

Too much barrel. Wait [Bang!] a minute[Bang!] Mr. Badguy while[Bang!] I[Bang!] pull my[Bang!] big honkin hogleg [Bang!]out of this[Bang!] shoulder rig.

Is that too much of the too much's?

Energy, yes, momentum no. Mass is very important to momentum.

Nope, just about right. :)

.480 too big for concealed carry? Na, I have a 5 inch naval gun cut down to 4 inch barrel , carried in a Galco shoulder holster, works just fine.

Why do people want to carry huge cartridges in huge revolvers? The power of some of these things is right up there with 45/70's. And the weight is too. And yet, you can't hit as well as a long gun.

Too much recoil, too much fun.

Well, here he's claiming to spend some $1200 per week on .500 S&W "plinking" ammo, which he also said was for concealed carry, so I'd guess you're on the right track...

Too much recoil, too few follow-up shots.

While I suppose we SHOULD be concerned about things like overpenetration, my MAIN concern is having the best tool for the job. Yes, you can nail shingles with a 16-pound sledgehammer... but why would you want to?

If you are the ONLY person doing something a particular way, you are either the smartest guy on the job, or you are the....

I am thinking about carrying my 7 1/2" ruger .480 and was wondering if that would be considered too much.

Not if you wear a belt AND suspenders on a daily basis.... :uhoh:

Not really. Energy is equal to mass times velocity squared. That's velocity that's squared, not mass. So velocity is "more important."

If so, why do you have to increase velocity by a factor of 2 in order to get a number relavant enough to compute with the mass number?... :scrutiny:

Why do people want to carry huge cartridges in huge revolvers?

Because carrying huge cartridges in small revolvers can be quite painful... :what:

If you absolutely, positively, must disintegrate your target, then, by all means do

Your target....and your wrists.... :p

If you ever have to shoot someone with it you better be darn sure what's behind them because likely you'll be shooting that too!

I don't think the .480 is enough. I have a WW2 bazooka for sale so you might as well use that. I love the bang bang bang scenario.

Why are you people still answering posts from this guy. He is the same person who was asking about SD ammo for his S&W 500 and S&W 460. Can't you see he is making fun of all people who carry a handgun? The last time I posted this he sent me a PM and cussed me. He is a Troll and we all know we aren't supposed to feed the Trolls!

Carry it IWB 11:00, and on the other side so you dont tip over, carry a Machette.

You will be a hit with the ladies.

Is that a 7.5" barreled 480 ruger in your pants or are you just glad to see me??

Seriously 480 is underpowered, carry a 16" TC encore pistol in .300 win mag instead.

envonge,
Stop sending my PM's where you call me names. This it the second time you have done so. If you continue to do so I will forward them to a Mod. At least have the guts to do it in open forum instead of hiding behind a PM.

Have a nice day.

I figured he was just inexperienced, as in just starting to like guns a few days ago, and figured bigger is better. But having just read the alledged few hundred rounds of .500 S&W being shot in a session, I don't know how this couldn't be a joke.

Forward it to a mod please. We don't need this trolling.

Please do.

envonge just sent me a verbal assault (PM).. I have no idea why.. something is wrong with this guy and should NOT be part of this group :scrutiny:
