Hi all. I was thinking of getting a 480 Ruger Super Redhawk. the store wants $575 for it. It is the older model with a 6 shot with a 7 1/2 barrel. I roll my own so ammo is not a issue. I would like any comments that you have.

PS I just moved to New Mexico from New Jersey and it is so nice to be Free. If anyone reading this is living in NJ or any prison cell state to move. I would reccomend that you move here or any other state that offers Freedom.
Thanks

It likely doesn't have many rounds fired through it, as many folks buy such cannons with high hopes only to discover that all that recoil, blast, and noise doesn't hold the romance of looking through catalogs and fondling such pieces in their LGS.
If you reload, you are in a much better position.
I prefer iron sights on the RSR is shoot, it is a very well made revolver, and will last a very long time, and is lots of fun to shoot. A good set of 1/2" AR500 plates swinging on chains make perfect targets, as you will see how hard those rounds hit.

Ruger temporarily stopped production of the .480 Ruger models in 2007 due to fired case extraction issues. After the problem surfaced, Ruger changed to a 5-shot, rather than the original 6-shot cylinder.

As long as you don't intend to hot load it, it should be O.K. though.

These are good guns and the .480 is a wonderful cartridge. It covers virtually 90% of the .475Linebaugh's spectrum. A big, fat 425gr LBT at 1200fps will take anything on planet earth yet is much more pleasant to shoot than the .454. With 48,000psi to play with, it reaches some impressive velocities with 275-325gr jacketed pills, making it a viable 150yd cartridge in capable hands. I haven't had any extraction issues with mine.

Only a handful of five-shot .480's ever shipped, 20 or 30 Alaskans. No 7½" or 9½" models.

I like the cartridge. Where handguns are concerned, I think frontal area is more important than velocity. A 400+ grain cast bullet will do pretty much anything you need (in North America, anyway) at 1000 FPS, and that's not unpleasant in the big Super Redhawk.

But boy, that's an ugly gun!

It's absolute garbage. Buy it and send it to me for proper disposal.

The 480 is a great caliber. Even loaded up like CraigC mentioned (425 @ 1200fps) it is still suprisingly pleasant to shoot....as compared to the other big bores and even a hot loaded 44mag.

The other thing you will probably find out is that the cartridge has the capability for exceptional accuracy.

There is nothing walking the earth that will stand up to the 480. It is more than capable of taking everything walking the planet....even on the dark continent.

I consider the .480 to be the most economical of all of the big bores.

Both my son & I have 6 shot SBH in 480 Ruger.

Never had any extraction issues.

I paied 650. for mine 3-4 years ago...

Love it

As long as the OP reloads, it will be around a long time. However, it would be possible for the 480 to become difficult to attain, but that would require two things: starline to go out of business and 45-70 brass ceasing to be available.

Love the round. Strong, but not overly strong where it's no fun to shoot. My dad has a super redhawk 7.5" barrel that he put a red dot on. Fires true, no extraction issues, 6 shot cylinder. Since you reload, that takes the biggest issue away, factory loaded ammo is pricey.

I would get it in a flash. I have a 480 SRH. Shoots good. The caliber is much under-rated and was never marketed properly by Ruger. But a lot just wanted the 454 C SRH which I don't really understand. Versatility... I know. Big deal. I shoot 480's in my 480 and 357 mags in my 357 mag.

I have a SRH and BFR in 480...I kill a deer or two every year with my 480's. I handgun hunt alot and you can't beat the 480 for a deer thumper.I load 325 cast
