Does anyone know where I can get a 5.45x39 chambered barrel for a Savage 11? I know cmparmory sells a whole gun modified to shoot 5.45, but I'm just interested in the barrel itself.
I figure 5.45 is so much cheaper than .223 I can swap my 223 barrel for a 5.45 barrel for plinking, then swap for 223 barrel when i do precision shooting. I'm planning ot install the barrel myself, I did alot of research about rebarreling and it seems pretty easy to do, just need the right tools and make sure the headspace is right.

I prefer chrome-lined bores if possible...

alternatively are there Ak74 barrel blanks without the gas hole drilled and are there gunsmiths who can profile and thread it for me for use with a savage 11?

I believe they take a used rem 700 barrel and refurbish them a lot of times. Should be a few companys that will do it.

There is more too it then finding a barrel.
(Which I don't know of anyone making.)

5.56/.223 is a .224" bore, but the Russian round uses a .220" bore.
And I doubt anyone is set up to drill & rifle them.
And they most certainly would not be chrome lined if they did.

I think the AK-74 barrel shank is too small to thread for a Savage action.

Also, the 5.45x39 case head measures .394" and the .223 measures .378".

So your .223 bolt face & extractor won't fit the 5.45x39.

Anyway, you would have to shoot a metric ton of 5.45x39 ammo to save enough money to pay for the conversion.

Your best bet is to take up reloading.
Then you can shoot .223 cheaper then 5.45x39.

not to mention most ammo youre going to shoot for cheap is going to be really cheap surplus and your groups arent even going to be worth firing through a bolt action.. bolt face is way difference too, i know because ive been strongly contemplating converting my AK-74 to 5.56mm, id need a new barrel, an entirely new bolt head assembly, feed ramp, magazines.. so far off from a simple barrel swap
