I want a 5.45x39 Krinkov SBR. What are my options?

I have an M92 PAP that I SBR'd by adding a Stormwerkz hinge and Manticore Arms triangle stock. I would like to develop something along those same lines only in the 5.45x39.

As I understand, some ridiculous law/rule disallows 5.45X39 pistols so I would likely have to buy a rifle and either outfit it with a short barrel or chop the barrel down. What are your ideas?

Mods, I posted this under the NFA forum, but did not receive any replies, hence why I'm posting to the rifle forum now. Thanks.

I wouldn't take my word for it, however, my understanding is that there is nothing federally illegal about a 5.45x39 pistol as long as it is not used with "armor piercing" varieties of 5.45x39. Some varieties of 5.45x39 have been banned for importation due to it being classified as a "armor piercing pistol ammo."

I'm sorry to post this here, but this is a perfect opportunity to straighten out the common etymology a bit. "Krinkov" is not even a word in Russian language. SBR-type AK:s were commonly known as Suka (b*tch), Okurok (cigarette butt) or simply Aksu before unfortunate, misguided phonetic word adaptations from Afghan tribes who were regularly on the receiving and of Aksu fire at the time. Yes, "everyone" calls them Krinkovs nowadays, except for overzealous and annoying enthusiast like myself.

Now, if I've understood correctly, the existence of some 7.62x39 and 5.25x39 AK pistols was used as a quasi-legal and far-fetched excuse to prevent importation of (some) cheap steel-jacket surplus ammo to the US, not the other way around. I have a faint recollection of reading about this a long time ago, probably in mid-90's, so someone with more accurate and better referenced information might want to chime in to either confirm or correct this.

Ballistically 7.62x39 is a better choice for a SBR, due to much better case volume vs. bore volume ratio and less velocity loss when the barrel is chopped down, but this is irrelevant if you've already decided on 5.45x39 and that's what you want.

The excuse the BATF used to ban importation of 5.45x39 7N6 ammo was that there was an AK-74 "pistol" made in Hungary??.

Truth was this "pistol" was a full-auto carbine with folding stock, of which less then 50 totally experimental models of were made.
NONE were ever imported into the US, and the design was never put into production.
In any case, a full-auto folding stocked military weapon was not importable at all and wasn't a pistol in any way.
However it was a handy excuse for the Obama BATF.

As for owning an AKSU, there are legal SBR versions made and sold by Arsenal and K-Var.
They can give you the info on how you can go about buying one.

They also have a legal 16 inch barrel version.
