Used to grab them as they went down a hole and generally ended up shoulder deep wondering if there might be a snake in there too. They could swell out and jam themselves tight and it was a trick pulling them out. Usually had to let tme move forward and then yank hard before they could reemboss themselves into the hole.
At one time, they were very common around here and it was not unusual to see them all over a field or wood lot. Like other small animals, they have not faired at all well against the mass urbanization and general overpopulation of Texas. Squirrels do well in the cities but the country side, such that it is, have very little besides deer, hogs, sheep, goats and cattle.
