ive been flipping through the threads, has anyone had a chance to try the 5.7x28 conversion for the AR? im really curious on results feedback, pros/cons, blahblahblah...

good range/maint reports my reflect directly on my future purchases

If the mags or ammo were significantly cheaper than 5.56x45mm, it would make sense. As it stands, an AR in 5.7mm loses a lot in ballistics compared to an AR in 5.56mm, yet is significantly bulkier and heavier and not much cheaper than a PS90 in 5.7mm.

To clarify my point, if you want 5.7, get a PS90; if you want an AR, get it in 5.56, because the 5.7 AR combines the worst aspects of both, not the best. Now if somebody made a 5.56mm carbine as light and compact as a PS90, then we're cooking with gas.

ive got 2 of them (one getting SBR'd) and its a really well built piece. the AR57 can be built for significantly less money that a PS90 costs new. yes, its a bigger rifle than the ps90, but not everyone loves the tiny bullpup design. the AR57 is better balanced than a standard AR imo, and can hold 50 rounds of ammo with minor mods...plus you can hollow out a standard AR mag and have a built in brass catch.

Saying the gun combines the worst of both, clealrly says to me you have no experience with the gun....and the feasablilty of a 5.56 PS platform isnt great. it would be almost 4" wide to work ala the PS chasis.

its different, its fun...and not terribly impractical. if we bought guns based on pure practicality...well, we wouldnt own many, right?

I suspect bonedust is 100% correct here.

I just ordered one, along with dies and ammo. Late X-Mas to me. I have already been saving up brass from the range. I think more guns will come along that chamber this little round.

It should be a ton of fun. I like the low recoil part. My shoulder barks at me if I shoot a lot of .223 or 7.62 X 39, not to mention .308 etc. I should be able to shoot a butt load of 5.7 with no discomfort, out of one of the same platforms I would pick up to defend myself.

I thought long and hard about a .22 LR upper first, but went with the 5.7 for the "cool new round to reload" factor. A .22 LR will come along one day as well. :)

Arfcom would be a good place for info

I had one for a little while but sold it about a month ago, the problem was finding decent optics and still be able to remove the mag. I found a fair compromise in a knock off ACOG style scope. I also hollowed out a 30 round mag for a brass catcher. The set up worked well but It just didn't do it for me. I much prefered my AR's in .223 over the 5.7x28 so it had to go.

i'm not all hell bent on owning a rifle with that exact caliber, but it looks like a different concept and something nice to add to the gun locker. i couldnt ever seeme buying something like the PS90, its just butt ugly and there are very few bullpups i like out there. i just am curious about the design, the capability to carry 50 rounds, and what others think on its performance, if its worth it or not

pros/cons

Oooh, I can help with that.

Cons: It's a FULL-SIZED rifle, shooting a pipsqueak small varmint round. Terrible platform choice. Makes no sense at all without the tiny bullpup config. Why not shoot a better (and cheaper) round from a rifle or carbine?

Pros. It's "neat". It can help you make your wallet lighter to carry around, if you need help with that.

YMMV. :D

That sums it up pretty well

The true sweet spot for this would be for someone with a registered FA lower.

Wonder what the full auto rate of fire would be on that.......

Is anyone else getting a kick out of poodle shooters calling other poodle shooters pipsqeaks? I mean that I can't say I disagree, but I still don't see 5.56 aficionados calling out 5.7 aficionados because of the 5.7's comparative lack of stopping power ever getting old. Apparently, the ammo weight/recoil/follow-up shot/bullet performance arguments only go so far? And mark my words, next time one of you 5.56 aficionados shows up in a battle rifle thread touting your poodle shooter's advantages with regard to ammo weight, recoil, ect...

I'm totally calling out your "pipsqueak" little round ;)

I've been looking at 5.7 uppers, but for me the novelty vs. value scale hasn't tipped me toward a purchase. It is a very innovative piece, especially with using the PS90 mags and the brass dropping down the mag well. It's also a certain conversation starter at the range, but I'm just not sold that it's any more advantageous than .223 in this form, just different.

With the ammo crunch I have found 5.7 more readily and at a lower price than brass cased .223. Reloading for the 5.7 is less expensive than for the .223. One does need to have the brass though since I do not believe it is commercially available.

That said I own a PS90 think I have a decent understanding of the limits of the 5.7x28 cartridge. I have seen its performance on varmints as well as the performance of .223, 7.62x39, 9mm, .357 mag, .45 ACP, etc. I don't really see the point in this upper to be honest. The 5.7 is IMO not sufficient for defensive use in a semi auto. In terms shooting animals it seems as effective as a .22 mag and much less effective than a .223. 50 rounds is cool but the mags are very expensive and it really isn't a huge advantage for the way I use a 5.7x28 chambered gun to have 50 versus 30 in the mag.

If one wants it just because they think it is cool. That is reason enough in my book, but I cannot see a real purpose for it.

If I had a full auto lower then I might want one. The 5.7 round is very controllable in full auto.
