Happened in town today....

http://www.mountainhomenews.com/story/1607889.html

A high-school student was "accidentally" shot by a five-year-old child on a residential street corner off school grounds Wednesday morning, during the high school lunch hour break.

"The 16-year-old victim was shot at about 11:18 a.m. at the corner of N. 10th East and East Jackson streets, around the corner and about half a block from the Hacker Middle School grounds........The child apparently was playing with a 9mm pistol owned by his parents when the older student was accidentally shot in the abdomen while he was standing on the street corner...The shot had been fired from the yard of a home across the street, in the area of E. 2nd South and N. 10th East streets. At this time it is believed only one shot was fire. The bullet hit the victim in the left side of his back and exited out the front of his body "

Looks like a 5 yr old unsupervised got parents gun and shot a 16 yrd old student while he was out for lunch. 1st of all why is a 5 yr old outside alone? And PLEASE parents lock up your guns from children who do not understand the repercussions/danger of firearms.

I hope the kids pulls through but he was life flighted out and was in serious condition so who knows.

I guess this is a lesson for all gun owners with young children.

I fail to see how this is not a relevant topic. One of the stated areas of this sub-forum is "Introduce new people to responsible firearm ownership"

There are many new people here weekly new to guns and have children around and think a top dresser drawer under their socks etc (not that this is where the child found the gun) is a safe place to store a gun.

Sometimes tragedy can better open ones eyes on what not to do which was reiterated by my statement "Looks like a 5 yr old unsupervised got parents gun and shot a 16 yrd old student while he was out for lunch. 1st of all why is a 5 yr old outside alone? And PLEASE parents lock up your guns from children who do not understand the repercussions/danger of firearms."

I think it is on topic, if nothing more than a reminder that kids shouldn't be left unsupervised with guns available to them.

A tragedy, no doubt - -

and one involving a firearm. Quite possibly, the law about keeping firearms away from children was violated. It is NOT necessary, though, to remind THR members to obey rthe law.

Off topic, and therefore CLOSED.
