Does anyone know if the loading data for 50 Beowulf on Alexander Arms web page is starting loads or MAX loads?

since the Beowolf and the .500 s&w mag have almost the same case capacity, one could make a general comparison of the velocities of these two rounds...only problem is that the velocity of one is in a short handgun and the other is in a longer rifle barrel. Even so...the rifle velocities are still very similar to the .500 mag handgun velocities for any given bullet weight, so I would expect the beowolf loads are in the mid to lower range pressure levels. Remember this beowolf round is designed for a semi auto action on an aluminum alloy frame.

I have worked up to the loads that were included with the Beowulf dies I bought.

As I recall, they were identical to the ones listed on the web site.

I would consider them maximum loads. I know that my shoulder agrees with me about this. :)

I am not saying that you couldn't get away with more, but this cartridge/gun combination works at a level where it would be difficult to tell when you get into the danger zone. I don't think that it is a good candidate for hot rodding.

The listed loads are pretty good at throwing huge chunks of lead at decent velocities anyway. In the 19th century, these ballistics would have been considered plenty good for buffalo.

I e-mailed Alexander Arms. Here is their reply -

Dear Sir

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the loading data we show for the Beowulf. This data is the maximum load and is also the recommended load to ensure that the gun will cycle reliably. If you desire the loads can be reduced for certain applications by up to 5% but each must be evaluated to ensure that the gun operates correctly.

Best Regards

Bill Alexander
