i just picked one up and am looking to put a scope on it. any recommendations about what to get or what not to get? i don't need mil-dots or other purpose reticles, fine duplex will work for me. i'm just looking for something that will stand up to the abuse that the 50 BMG will put it through when fired. i'm kinda leaning towards Leupold's 8.5-25x50.

The Leupold Mark 4 will work on the 50. Most 50's you will see either the Mark 4 or Nightforce scopes. Plan also on some good rings. Badger Ordanance Max 50 rings are a good choice. They are a little pricey but withstand the 50 recoil well. What model 50 did you get?

i got Barrett's M82A1. i went to Leupold's website and can't find anything on the Mark 4. would the VXIII's not hold up?

i just sent my application in to FCSA so i haven't heard anything back yet.

I might take a few days for FCSA to process everything. I am a member there also. The Mark 4's tend to be a little more robust than the other lines. I have a Mark 4 LR/Tactical 6.5x20 currently on my 50 and have been happy with it so far. You will have a blast(no pun intended) with the Barrett. Although with it being semi-auto you will not like the price of a shooting trip. 50 BMG ammo is hard to come across right now and prices are climbing. Expect about $3.00 a round for plinking ammo and higher for match unless you handload.

vx-3 will hold up fine... suggest you drop to a 6.5-20, though. i have a helluva time using my 8.5-25x scope on much above 21-22x because mirage is so wicked. most of my 1000 yard and beyond shooting is handled just fine at 16-18x.

an alternative to consider is nightforce, and for the well-heeled scope shopper it is awfully tough to beat us optics (and they look the coolest, too).

You can call the office in UT and ask for your info, that way you'll be able to get into the forums.

Stay away from ATN scopes/products some of the worst junk out there, their brochures make them sound like the best thing to ever hit the market but that's far from true.

The scope you're looking at will work fine on the M82.

I have heard many people say for a 50 BMG there is no choice on what brand of scope to get for it... only what Nightforce to put on it.
