Last weekend, I went hiking out across some lava flows south of the Craters of the Moon national monument in Idaho. I was hiking to a cave that I had never been to before when I came across a very old 50 cal shell casing. It was stamped "M43". I have read that during WW2, the lava flows in this area were used for strafing and bombing runs and I am curious if M43 50 cal ammunition was used during this period. The shell casing was found about 3 miles out accross a very treachous lava flow, which makes me think this brass may have fallen from the sky...

Anyone familiar with M43 50 cal ammunition?

The M stands for the Milwaukee Ord. Plant and the 43 is the year it was made, so keep it as you have a piece of history from WWII.:)
