After browsing around on many websites it has came to my attention that .50 cal sniper rifles are attempting to be banned in NY. I own one. What excactly would this mean for me living in NY with a .50 cal if this law got passed?

:fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

Yours is worse then ours in Kali, you'll have to sell it to someone out of state or turn it in to the police.

Swap in a barrel for a similar but smaller caliber. Arent there some sub50 caliber rounds made from necked down 50 bmg cases?

Basically you will have to leave or lose the gun.

move.

however the problem comes in when you're only 14... give it to a relative out of state.

Or just fail to sell it and hide it somewhere in an act of civil disobedience and if they catch you take it to the Supreme Court. If the PRK ever bans any of my guns, I don't think I am going to comply.

New York Legislative Update and Special Election Information!

Friday, June 24, 2005

Lawmakers returned to Albany today, one day past their scheduled recess, to complete bills still under negotiation. The good news is that at press time, the Senate had not acted on several NRA-opposed measures, including A 673, which creates the crimes of failure to store a firearm "safely" and criminally negligent storage of a firearm; A 2302, which would prohibit the retail sale of a handgun that does not contain a "child proofing" or integrated safety device; A 4471/S 2590, which would ban the sale, use and possession of .50 caliber firearms; A 2345, which would impose new restrictions on firearm dealers, and two bills which would expand the state’s ban on so-called assault weapons: A 2466 and S 5504. Though legislators will be heading back to their districts, all of these bills remain alive during the recess. We will keep you informed of any plans by the legislature to return to Albany.

Also, a special election will be held on Tuesday, June 28. If you are a registered voter, you are eligible to participate in this election! For more information on the candidates in this election, please call the NRA-ILA Grassroots Division (800) 392-8683. Voter turnout is expected to be low, so it’s more important than ever that you vote on Tuesday, June 28

Since this bill would restrict the possesion of .50 cal firearms, does it keep you from owning a .50 AE or a .50 cal. muzzleloader?

I am with el rojo on this one. However illegal I would feel much better "hiding" my gun than totally getting rid of it. It is my favorite rifle and if saying this bill passes I will find some quiet neck of the woods with a very large hill to go every saturday  . I still hope however this bill fails :cuss: .

I say forget about "what would happen". Instead, focus on MAKING SURE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN! What I mean is, you're asking the wrong question. Instead of pondering what you will do after rights have been stripped, ask what you can do to make sure it doesn't happen in the first place.

I emplore everyone to not simply hope that the bill fails while you wait to see what happens. DO SOMETHING. GET ACTIVE.

(As a practical matter, I understand the purpose of asking "what would I do if...?". There is nothing wrong with that. I'm just trying to make a point. If a person in any State of the Union owns or would like to own a .50, then they need to get involved and active in stopping nonsense legislation.)

Rosey, he can't even vote and his rights are already being taken away by the previous generation.

Or just fail to sell it and hide it somewhere in an act of civil disobedience and if they catch you take it to the Supreme Court. If the PRK ever bans any of my guns, I don't think I am going to comply.

I find I may end up in a similar situation. There is nothing more dangerous to a tyranical government than a well financed fella with a lot of spare time and a knack for civil disobediance. (pats the M82, well, 'almost' nothing ;)

artherd, I pray that you're serious. An intelligent suit against the gov't may be exactly what will be needed in the end.

At least, I hope that's all that would be needed.

Here's the problem(s) with not registering your .50.

1) While AR's, AK's... are a dime a dozen at any range, .50's aren't. While a cop might walk right by and not give a second look, he can zoom right in on a .50.

2) If you don't register it, you'll never be able to shoot it. Refer to question 1 for the answer.

Don't think it can't happen? Ask Artherd, he's already had it happen while out shooting his .50. So not registering it is worse, you can't shoot it and if you get caught with it your screwed.

When I go to shoot my serbu I can't take it to any range already because none of the ranges in my area can handle it however my dad has friends who live way out in the country so we go out there once or twice a month. I really doubt a cop would even know it was there. If a cop did pull up switch it with a 12 gauge. My dad and I have gave this much thought. Also I have been researching some of those necked down cartridges. There are a few that take it down to 485 instead of 50 so I do have a few options.

Mr. Loud Guns,

You're 14? Well, glad to see some adult in your life is a good influence. (I assume someone over the age of 18 bought the .50 for you or you inheriented it.)

Think of this as a real world civics lesson. Best of luck.

I'm in southern PA. Not sure how firearms are to your family, but consider moving to just inside the PA border or somehow storing your weapons just over the border. PA doesn't really have any wacko firearms laws. Except for a PA State Police registry on handguns, but we're fighting it. It's kinda odd to have the State Police actively fighting to continue to break the law, but they are. Sigh.

Yes I am really 14, I saved up the money for the 50 calhowever my parents made the final transaction. I am not sure how this will affect muzzleloaders and shotguns but it WILL affect them. NY is taking away my rights now and when I become legally of age. As for giving it to a relative out of state, that could be a problem considering my parents never told anyone I even own any firearms considering most members of my family are totally against it. This is more of a story of Anne Frank the 50cal rifle. I am screwed. :fire: :cuss: :banghead: :uhoh:

By the way if all there was is a state handgun registery I would be counting my blessings. NY's laws on handguns are almost pathetic.

Mr. Loud Guns, you must have one hell of a part time job. Especially if you saved up the $1800 plus to buy the Serbu. Damn, I could barely scrap together $100 when I was your age. Nice going. Maybe when you grow up you should be a Financial Planner. Your obviously good with money. ;)

Unfortunately here in Mass, we are facing the same situation. They are trying to ban our 50 cals too . As a Serbu owner as well, I will be storing it up in NH. I'm in the process of getting an out of state permit right now. I never sell a gun once I've bought it and I'm not going to start now.

Yes I'm trying to fight it by calling and mailing my lawcritters, but us gun owners are pretty much a minority.

Don't make the same mistake Anne Frank's family did. Stay mobile. Obviously you have a couple years until you're on your own. Keep your .50, and if possible, keep it under circumstances that are legal.

Not sure how you saved up the cash, but ipso facto, you have my highest regards.

Thanks, it took me about a year and a half to save up for that thing. Once I am out of college I plan on moving out of state anyway so I guess if I can't shoot or have to secretly shoot it it won't be horrible. I mostly really have the problem with extremists who are attacking the second amendment and WINNING. Guns have saved our freedom on a number of occasions and are MOSTLY a beneficail role in society. Also 50 caliber crimes are at a minimum now days and the shere price of these things keep them out of criminal hands. When I got mine for 1800 dollars it was a DEAL. (especially with the scope, tripod and 36 inch heavy barrel). I didn't know that other states were against these besides California and New York but NOW I have a problem with them to. Us 50 cal owners are being oppresed. Most of us are responsible gun owners and denying responsible gun owners there tools of liberty, well that's a problem. :banghead:
