I know this is probably a really stupid question but I've looked at the NY state firearm laws and they just don't make any sense to me.

According to my understanding of it I can own an AR15 only if I have the A1 or A2 buttstock on it, no bayo lug and no flash suppressor, so an example I would be able to own a RRA varmit version, because it hase the A2 stock, no bayo lug and a plain barrel. because I'd really like to get one when I get back from Afghanistan, along with a beawolf .50 upper.

Am I correct in this assessment or are all civilian versions of the M16 banned in NY?

Man I hate living in this state, I can walk around NYC with a fully loaded M16A2 with no problems, but heaven forbid I own an AR15 on my own. Because we all know I'm only responsible when I'm in uniform.:banghead: :fire:

"don't make any sense" well you understand that much about all gun laws !! Perhaps the best would be to try to find a knowledgable dealer and ask him .
