im looking into a custom caliber like the 500 nitor. its been a long time favorite of mine. i know the 458 lott and others are more avalible but for me i WANT a 500NE gun.

I reload, not a problem with this part. I need advice on a action that can support the larger rim diameter of the NE cartridge. I hear a Ruger no.1 single shot can do it. Can anyone confirm this at all?

THANKS in advance on any help. This is a long awaited project and im ready to get things rolling.

Years ago a gunsmith who was doing some work for me told me he had a customer who wanted a Ruger No 3 in 45/70 converted to 470 NE. I would think going to the 500 on a Ruger No 1 wouldn't be a stretch. Though I think Ruger made or makes a No 1 in 470 NE.

just checked and them seem to be able to make the 500 NE in ruger 1's with light mods.
seems like the mauser actions or CZ 550 actions do better off hand. I was hoping to do a piece together meaning i can pick up a good gun/action and then send it off to a smith fo work.

I could buy a custom action but were talking $1000 for it at the very least.

A 1914/1917 Enfield makes a good conversion to .500 Nitro or better yet .500 Jeffery or .505 Gibbs. The mags will hold 3 rounds without potbellying the bottom metal BTW. I had one in .505 for a while but sold it 20 years ago.

Gordon, the enfields i've heard of people doing other stuff to like .338 Lapuas also. very interesting this old piece of weaponry is being used for high pressure custom conversions...hmmm....now the trick is to find one thats in good shape to use as a donor.

I'd really love a .577 T-Rex but its so much of a novalty. I'd shoot it and i'd reload for it but it would collect dust like alot of things for me.

I will see what i can find on Enfields and give it a shot. thanks!

The 303 British is rated to 49,000psi - relatively low pressure for a rifle round.

The 505 Gibbs is only rated to 39,000psi, which is similar to the 500NE at 40,000psi.

Compare to a 30-06 rated to 60,000psi.

These old hunting rounds are actually very low pressure. There are a lot of reasons and myths surrounding that, but suffice it say that cartridge size is not indicative of chamber pressures.

And age is not a sign of weakness. The P14 and 1917 have been converted to all manner of "modern" high pressure cartridges; incuding the whole family of H&H belted magnums.

The .500 requires a magnum bolt face so the CZ550 African--a Mauser action--would be the cheapest way to go except that being a straight walled rimmed cartridge it doesn't lend itself to0, too well to bolt actions--which is why you've always seen them in double rifles since the added weight helps hold recoil down.

570 gr @ 2,150 ft/s velocity with 5,850 ft/lbs energy

Also it's a big, fat case:
Bullet diameter .510 in (13.0 mm)
Neck diameter .535 in (13.6 mm)
Base diameter .580 in (14.7 mm)
Rim diameter .660 in (16.8 mm)
Case length 3.01 in (76 mm)
Overall length 3.68 in (93 mm)
Case capacity 138 gr water

If you did it on a single shot, then mercury tubes and a very dedicated stock design with a great recoil pad would be required but the only action that I know of that would take that is the Martini & Hagn since they have one displayed on their website...BUT it isn't a $1,000 action.

Gary Reeder made up a Ruger #1 in NE type calibres called the Mega Beast using .577 Snider brass and again you're looking at a $2,500 conversion using your own supplied $1,200 tropical rifle.

I shoot my uncles a few times a year and he my .470 NE and .476 WR.

For bolt actions why not get yourself a .505 Gibbs

525 gr @ 2,300 ft/s velocity and 6,180 ft/lbs energy
600 gr @ 2,100 ft/s velocity and 5,877 ft/lbs energy

Bullet diameter .505 in
Neck diameter .538 in
Shoulder diameter .600 in
Base diameter .640 in
Case length 3.150 in
Overall length 3.850 in
Case capacity 178 gr water

or a .500 Jeffrey or the 12.7x70 mm Schuler
Max Overall Length: 3.500 in.
Case Capacity: 143.7 gr. water
Don't have case dimensions

570 gr @ 2,200 ft/s velocity and 6,127 ft/lbs energy

Ryan Breeding builds some amazing big bores bolt jobs.
