Indiana Deer Rifle Advice Needed

No .460 S&W fans out there?

I was a .460 fan but got tired of the butt woopin I took everytime I pulled the trigger. However, I do believe with the right bullet there are few critters on the planet that you couldn't kill with a .460. I have a .460 barrel for my Encore and it's tack driver. Warning: most .460 factory ammo is made to be shot from a pistol with an 8" barrel. For every 1" of extra barrel you're going to pick up about 40 fps. So, from my Encore I was easily hitting 2650-2700 fps and the bullets were fragmenting on impact...at least the Hornaday SST's did. Granted, everything I shot dropped stone dead in it's tracks but it made a mess.

I have since stopped using the .460 S&W and I now shoot .45 Colt +P out of the same barrel. Much more pleasant to shoot and quite accurate at 100 yds and plenty of velocity to put down a whitetail.

I also don't know of any AR platforms that will handle .460 S&W. I can't imagine any semi-auto platform that could take that kind of abuse but I'm sure someone could make one.

If you're dead set on buying a rifle caliber this year (see my previous post about the proposed reg change) I'd go with a Henry lever action in .44 mag. Ammo is easy to get, good 150 yd deer gun and has plenty of umph to cleanly kill a whitetail.
