i want to mount a light to my mossberg 590 but i dont want to lose the bayonet lug or the fact i can attatch my M9 to it
does anyone know of a way to mount a light with maybe a barrel clamp or any products for just this?
also whats a good weapon light for a shotgun?
i was looking at the ATN Javelin J169W is that a good choice?

The best way to mount a light without a clamp or a surefire forend would be a replacement forend w/ picatinny support...look into Mako or Choate

but thats what im looking for is a barrel clamp that works well and doesnt look bad any suggestions

again is the ATN Jevelin J169W a good weapon light?

Sorry misread. I would pay good price for a true aluminum clamp rather than a plastic one...depoends on what you want to spend though

try tacticalshotgunner.com

I think they have one made by Mesa Tactical that's pretty ok. Personally I own a 590 Mariner (no bayonet lug) and am in the process of mounting a light. If I do more than likely I'll go with a pictanny rail on my forend. Looks a lot cleaner that way I think. I don't have any experience with the ATN Javelin but I know the Surefire G2 nitrolon are GREAT!

TACSTAR makes a universal barrel mount; I have a LED LENSER on my defender 1300. I clamp it to the magazine instead of the barrel; just looks better. Just can't over tighten as it will compress the mag spring & fail to feed. I ordered through brownells for $21.99.

i unfortunatly have to mount it to the barrel in order to keep the bayonet to fit
i use this shotgun for HD hence why i want a light but i also play around with it at the range and with friends in the back yard so having the bayo on gives it that fun factor i dont honestly plan on taking the light off unless i have to change batteries or something

ive seen the clamps from mesa tactical and also laser devices makes one that looks nice ill check into the tacstar but yes i agree i want aluminum because i want it to last no expence spared (under $150 lol) i just want a solid mount that will not interfere with the bayo lug

and before anyone skims this im not interested in the surefire forend with light built in because i DO NOT want to cut my bayo lug for any reason

thanks badger i kept seeing the ATN and liked it but wasnt sure about it

any suggestions on where to mount the pressure switch?

and whats the door assembly?
that last one may be a noob question

im really liking the mesa tactical with the short rail
but will i need more than one if i get a larger light?
i want a light at or above 135 lumins any suggestions? most use is when i hear a noise in the middle of the night and im outside my house and im in the woods so its DARK lol

I prefer the pressure switch on the right side of the forend, towards the rear. (right-handed shooters) Flashlight should mount on the bottom of the shotgun, if possible. The pressure switch location allows the fingers of the weak (left) hand to depress the switch. I use my ring finger and middle finger. Place it towards the rear to minimize how far your weak hand has to extend... increases mobility.

The TLR-1 comes with a standard toggle switch. You can use it just like that and in that case, I'd mount it on the LEFT side of the weapon (right-handed shooter) and use the thumb of your left hand to engage the switch.

If you'd prefer to use the remote switch, you have to buy two things: 1) a coiled-cord switch. 2) a replacement switch housing for the TLR-1 that includes a plug-in socket for your coiled switch.

badger thanks for all the advice unfortunatly i cant mount the light on the underside due to the bayonet
(i dont use the bayo all the time but at the same time i dont want to take the mount off when i do slap it on there for dorky puffed chest cool factor moments)
why do u suggest the left side mount position i only ask because that was a thought i had last night and thought if it were on the right it would be out of my line of sight maybe you know better

still didnt answer my question about door assembly what is that exactly

thanks for all the help guys

I'm afraid your desires are out of my league. I don't believe a sling, bayonet, or heat shield (if you have one on the gun) are desireable on a home defense gun. At any rate, you don't have to sacrafice any of these with the mount. The bayonet should sit under the mount if you attach it forward of the bayonet mount. If you don't have a heat shield (and why would you) then you can mount it in front of the fore-end and behind the bayonet lug.

If you look at the TLR-1, there is a switch assembly at the back of the light. To work with a remote switch, this must be replaced with a new switch that includes a socket for the remote switch.

Finally, mounting the flashlight on the left side of the gun is a matter of preference as it is on the same side as the sidesaddle and means the overall gun is not as wide. Two other reasons. First, the shadow from the barrel/magazine is on the opposite side of the gun and doesn't obscure your target as much when you have the light on. The second is that when you "cut" a corner, the wall doesn't obscure the light as much... technical, but I've done this before and it works better on the left.

May I plug my belief that a sling will just get in the way and is counter to a gun that you need a light on anyways. The Bayonet is useless in any situation. Try to defend yourself in court if you had a fixed bayonet when you held somebody at gunpoint. Finally, the heat shield (if you have one) is less than worthless. It adds weight and bulk, scratches your barrel up, prevents mounting a flashlight in the right place, rusts, pinches your fingers, and looks stupid (my opinion).

Some other options. You can by a "Fab Defense" fore-end. It's marketed by Mako, made in Israel, and has rails for mounting your light if you prefer that. I didn't like mine much, but it was very well made. The other is a flashlight holder that'll go in your sidesaddle. Those seem kinda cheesy, but again, it's another option.

so badger basicly what your telling me is get a new gun?
you do realize i dont use a sling or bayonet in a HD situation right? but i do slap on a sling at the range and the bayo just for fun every once in a while
as for the 590 itself i love my shotgun in my opinion the heat shield does its job and yes i have fired a volume of rounds quickly so i have gotten the barrel HOT
as for home defence i gotta work with what i got im not a LEO or anyone special enough to have a SBS so thats what i got and for my property and home it works

No, just plugging my philosophy. Your heat shield is cramping your desire to have a light mounted.

Now I do.

Well, I'd avoid grabbing the barrel at ALL times. The reason that a bayonet lug and heat shield go together is that you only need to grab the barrel if you are bayonet-fighting. The gun is equipped with a fore-end for all other purposes.

as for home defence i gotta work with what i got

Honestly, you asked for opinins and I provided one. For the record. I didn't offer my opinion immediately, I just wanted to offer my philosophy on the matter. I used to have about five Mossberg heat shields in a bag I took to gun shows. I took them OFF of guns I'd buy at pawn shops and auctions so I could sell them.

You've got a gun that you're happy with and I'm cool with that. However, with the heat shield, sling, light mount, light, ammo, bayonet, sidesaddle, stock-sleeve carrier, ghost ring sights, scope mount, Eotech Scope, etc... modern shotguns are about 50-100% heavier and less useful with every ounce. I'd really like to see the public adopt my philosophy, but the cool factor seems to be working against me.

badger not trying to be a jerk im not at all upset with your opinion but please understand that other than the bayonet on occasion and the sling at the range for convenience the light will be the first thing ive mounted to this firearm the heatshield was on this firearm when i bought it and the military element is 90% of the reason i purchased it in the first place
i dont even have a side saddle ghost ring sights or any fancy red dot holo site of any kind as for weight i have to dissagree thanks to my lighter aluminum reciever (i know theres alot of hate on mossberg for that one) and my polymer stocks my shotgun weighs alot less than a buddies winchester 1897 in the same battle trim heat shield and all and against his model 12 in hunting trim its still lighter its even lighter than another friends 870 in 20 gauge mind you it is front heavy compaired to those guns but the over all weight isnt an issue its balance which i will be the first to admit the mossberg is lacking but i love my gun and am very happy with it as i stated before and i like the weight forward for some unknown reasons

The heat shield is fine in my opinion. i see his point of it being useful when bayonet fighting but i dont think thats all there is to it. there's much worse accessories, like a red dot or a laser.I loved the heat shield on mine if only it kept the barrel from burning my car seat while shooting!
