Will the Surefire forend 623FA or 623GFA clear the bayonet lug on a Mossberg 590A1? It used to be the case that you would have to remove the bayonet lug with the old 623. Then Surefire came out with the 623A that would clear the bayo lug.

I was assuming the “A†in the model number signified that the forend would clear the bayo lug on a 590A1. And, since the newer models retained the A designation that they too also cleared the bayo lug.

Doing my homework on TheFiringLine I come to find that the A is supposed to mean “the new style†forend. Now since the “new style†of the old 623A cleared the bayo lug does the “new style†in the new 623FA or 623FGA clear the lugo? Ouch, I have a headache now :D There is also an 623A01 which I assume is the 623A since they both claim to clear the lug.

I e-mailed Surefire and was told they no longer made the 623A. Well, I knew that so I asked if the new models would clear the bayo lug and was told no. I get the feeling it could.

Anyone tried a new model on a 590A1?

I like the bayonet lug on my 590A1. I'll probably never have to fix bayonet and charge someone, but I think its cool to have. Rather than get the Surefire, I just went with a Streamlight mount and an M3 light.

I just installed a Surefire forend on my 590.

It definetly will not clear the bayo lug.

So, the next step is to have the lug removed since I don't need or want it. I would like to keep the sling stud, though. Does anyone know if there will be enough bayo lug remaining to tap and drill for the sling stud?

There isn't much point in keeping the sling stud. If you use a sling like that, the light will hit it. There are sling brackets that fit under the magazine end cap and hold the sling off to the side. Vang Comp has them.

If you want to used a sling stud, it can be mounted on the side of the barrel ring.

Even when the light clears the lug, it doesn't clear by much. If there is enough slop in the slide, the light will rub on the lug. If by some chance you decide to fix a bayonet, the light will hit it. Besides that, drive by bayonetings are a no-no. :p

Doing my homework on TheFiringLine I come to find that the A is supposed to mean “the new style†forend.

Small correction. "FA" is the "new style" indicator. Previously, the "F" stood for the momentary AND constant on/off option. The "A", as you mention, was used only for the Mossy 590 Responder that would clear the bayonet lug.

To answer your question, I do not believe Surefire currently has a FA style Responder that will clear the bayonet lug on a Mossberg 590. I think we'll have to wait for a while for SF to introduce one.
