A friend brought his 597 Rem .22 mag. over with a plastic baggie with charging handle and extractor and spring, said it came apart while shooting it . I suspect he dropped it. Any way I installed the extractor and attempted to install bolt charging handle. I could see no way for the handle to lock in! I checked several schematics but I cannot find a clear view of handle,
I am pretty sure something is missing ie, spring ,whatever. any help from someone knowledgable on this would be appreciated.

Thanks Ridge ,
I know its removable, but as it is it will fall out, I don't think its supposed to be that removable.
I believe something is missing and I cannot find a clear schematic that shows this area. Anyone had their bolt out and knows how it is made?

There is a piece of spring steel in the bottom of the groove that holds the bolt handle in place, with a bump in the end of it that fits into a detent on the underneath side of the handle. I don't have a camera right now but I'll check tomorrow and try to get you a pic if you still haven't figured it out.

Thanks IFISHSUM
That is what I needed to know, I would really appreciate a picture.
Hopefully I can return the favor some time.

Ifishsum is correct. The 597 bolt is retained by a piece of flat spring steel with a small bump in the spring. This bump engages a depression on the bottom of the stalk portion of the bolt handle, and retains the bolt handle under friction.

This bolt retaining spring is rivetted to the bolt body in slot for the bolt handle by a blind rivet.
