6.5 jap load data

hello all,
here in Idaho spring turkey and Black bear are just around the corner. since trying my damnedest to kill anything at all ended in complete disaster last year, this year I am going to go ahead and try my hand at hunting with my milsurps.

the two I'm considering are a 6.5 arisaka with 140 gr nosler accubonds and an M1 garand with 180gr speer deepcurls. does anyone have a tackdriver load for either of these guns and bullet weights?

factory 6.5 ammo that I have is actually pretty amazing for accuracy but I just want something with a little bit better BC just to be sure.
 
probably shouldn't have even mentioned the turkey. turkey in idaho is shotgun only... this is just for blackbear.
 
Be careful with 180 grn rounds in an M1 Garand they have been known to bend the OP rod. I believe they recommend 168 or lower.

bullet weights have nothing to do with it, powder burn rates and case pressures are what factor in.
hornady 8th edition goes all the way from 150gr to 180 for the M1 specifically.
 
Never played with the 6.5 Jap before but in my 6.5 Sweed RL22 is the ONLY powder I use for 140gr, it works like magic. Lagit honest to goodness tack driver all day long. Working on a 180gr Deep Curl load for the 06 right now, I'll post my findings after my next trip to the range.

correct it is the pressure curve that is the problem.
 
I loaded up a few rounds of 6.5x50 that shot quite well through my Japanese Type I rifle before I semi-permanently parked it on the shelf. I've got the load data written down somewhere that was passed down to me along with the rifle from the guy who brought it back from Iwo Jima after the war. He hunted whitetail with it for many, many years.

I'll see if I can dig up the load data for you tomorrow morning.
 
All I can tell you is, you don't have to worry about blowing it up. There's not enough powder that can fit in a 6.5 Jap case to blow that gun up. Not by a long shot; P.O. Ackley tried and failed. So if you need extra power, go for it. The gun can take it.
 
well I bought a pound of imr 4064 and loaded 140gr accubonds with 32.5 gr of powder and it's a tack driver load... unfortunately the chronograph was on the fritz yesterday and I have no idea the actual velocity they are travelling which is bad because accurbonds require at least 1800FPS to properly open up. these were supposed to be 2500-ish FPS loads and chronoes out to 2150 but factory hornady ammo that is supposed to be loaded to 2600 FPS chronoed out to little over 1800 FPS so I have no idea just what the velocity is on these darned things and black bear season is little over a week away.

also to anyone going off of the hornady books, one road block I ran into was even the starting load with standard hogdon 4831 will not fit into a 6.5 jap casing, I guess there are two different kinds of H4831...

Sorry, but you are wrong. With some powders, there would be more than enough in a 6.5x50 case to blow the gun. Please don't make statements like that, because some person less knowledgeable might try it.

I think I'll heed Jims advice, thought the Arisaka is one of the strongest actions around any gun can fail if you blow the pressure into the chamber instead of the barrel and seeing as this is a fairly rare rifle, as are my eyeballs(I've never found a set that I liked better) I think I'll stick to the manuals... though I think I'll stick to the sierra book as Hornady has major holes in their data...
 
In the 6.5, are you shooting a 19.5" carbine and expecting the velocity of a 31.5" rifle?
 
I'm not expecting the velocity of a 31.5 inch barrel but I'm sure not expecting 400 FPS slower and 800 FPS slower than their quoted factory velocity. those are not just barrel length velocity variances, those are serious issues with their load data.
