I just pick up a CZ 550 in a 6.5 x 55. Need to mount a scope on it. Have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 NIB. Friend has a Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x40 NIB. Offered to trade me if I would give $50 to boot. Both are black and duplex.

Any experiences with either? What do you all recommend?

I would keep the Nikon, it has the side focus, the front bell is smaller with no adjusting ring, and the Nikon service is probably better than Weaver/Blount. I have one on a heavy barreled Mini 14, 1500 rds down range, no problems.

Nikon. Better light transmision to the eye than the Weaver, better clarity, better warranty service if you bang it up.

I'm a dealer of both (and more) and Nikon really is hard to beat for bang for the buck value. To get better glass than the Nikons you have to spend a good chunk of change more.
(I've got a BDC Buckmaster on my 7MM and I love it)

weaver will have fantastically small reticles, yet easy to see, if will also be rock solid, and take any amount of recoil you give it. but if the nikon has a side focus, that would be enough to persuade me.

The Buckmaster is Nikons entry level scope. The Grand Slam is Weavers top of the line, competing with the Nikon Monarch line. There is a $100 difference in price at Midway with the GS the more expensive. Both have AO, the Weaver may be a hair brighter, but that`s sometimes a presonal call with two scopes useing good glass and both of these have excellent lens. Weaver is know in target circles as having excellent tracking and accurate adjustments in their scopes. I don`t know how this Nikon stacks up but likely is capable as well. I`d compare the 2 back to back in the same ligh and see which seems to give the best image, brightness, ect and go from there.
