Any of you have an AR chambered in 6.8 Remington? I am thinking about getting one because of the increase in power. I hear that many 6.8 owners hunt with them. Any opinions?
What and where are you hunting? Check your state laws for caliber, weapon (shotgun only?), action, and mag restrictions. I've heard good things about the 6.8SPC on deer-sized game. I don't think I'd hunt moose with it.
I got one for my boy. His first year and he bagged a nice 10. One shot and went down like a ton of bricks. Was pleasantly supprised by this cal. I agree not a moose gun. Got the DPMS. Only problem was the chamber was rough. A little time with the polish and great gun for deer. Just my .02.
Thanks for the input guys. I hear nothing but praise for this round for deer hunting and it fits in a modern package. That is, in our nations service rifle. I must get one.
I would not recommend trying to hunt Elk with this cartridge. I have seen what punishment an elk or moose can take. You want something more like a 30.06, 270 or larger for clean reliable kill. Sure the caliber is the same as the .270 Winchester but it lacks the power.
If you get lucky, it might. Most likely, it will not give you a clean exit wound. Worst case, if you hit a shoulder bone it probably will not penetrate enough to provide a clean kill.
