Guns found at Ill. school; 3 arrested.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A tip led police to six handguns in a high school locker and the arrest of three students early Tuesday, said police who were investigating why the weapons were brought into the building.

Police said they aren't sure what the teenagers had in mind, since no threat was made, there was no ammunition and the guns were left in a locker as classes started at Pontiac High School.

The building was locked down and all students were kept in classrooms after someone alerted a police officer on campus about the guns.

"When we are told that student A has guns, we immediately went to student A's area, his locker, and sure enough, there were guns there," Police Chief Dale Newsome said.

Newsome said he didn't know where the guns came from, but he speculated it could be easy since the school is in a farming community of about 11,800 about 80 miles southwest of Chicago and about 60 miles northwest of Champaign.

"It would not be uncommon for the parents of these children to have weapons," the police chief said.

The three teens were arrested on campus at the 900-student school.

Prosecutor Thomas Brown declined to identify the three students because they were juveniles. He wasn't sure what charges they could face.

It was unclear how the students knew one another, investigators said.

The school has received threats of violence in the past that led to other students' arrests, but those cases didn't appear to be related to Tuesday's case, said police Maj. Jim Woolford.

After the school was locked down, worried families gathered nearby.

"I got up there right away," said Nancy Wooldridge, whose 17-year-old daughter is a senior at the school. "We all decided we weren't going to leave until we knew our kids were safe."

An officer briefed them regularly, trying to reassure them, Wooldridge said, but "I wanted to feel her in my arms to definitely know that she was OK."

Classes are expected to resume Wednesday.

How is this possible? You are not allowed to have guns in school's, therefore how did they get in there?

You'd think as gun-unfriendly as IL is, this type of stuff wouldn't happen.

Shouldn't have guns at school, but I would like more details.

I wish they would just randomly distribute seized guns to local gun stores for legal sale or resale instead of eternal storage.

Why? If the guns arent being used to harm anyone what is the big deal? Either way it seems that my elders could responsibly bring firearms to school and there were no problems so what is the difference today?

That is near to me as well dmftoy1. I am in Normal, IL.

I think the major difference is that when we brought guns to school they typically didn't ever go INTO the school but sat in the gunrack in the rear window of the truck so we could go hunting after school (or had been hunting before school). I guess I can think of one occurrence where somebodies dad's pistol was in a locker, but I'd say that 99.999% of the guns that came to school were in the racks in the pickups. FWIW

6 handguns in a high school locker? 99% chance they were up to no good and probably a good thing they got caught.

Last year ended with the Virginia Tech shooting. The psychos have had all summer to work themselves up and plan for the copycat episodes. I'm afraid this is going to be a rough year. Everybody be safe.

I find it vaguely plausible that this wasn't a sign of impending trouble. It wouldn't be the first time that we've had a false alarm, heaven knows.

It's pretty indisputable that it's a bad idea for a grade school student to bring guns to school against rules. "Zero tolerance" expulsion, illegal possession, and all that.

Did your elders stash 6 handguns in their locker against federal, state, and school laws/rules? This is not about bringing a rifle to school just to have it with you for lawful use before/afterward. This is about some stupid kids with stuff they should not have had with them. I don't think they were trying to be test cases for handgun or firearm possession law.

Maybe they were just preparing for what some folks say is an inevitable attack by Al Qaida on our "safe schools". At least the schools will be safe for Al Qaida.

When I was a kid we could have cased and unloaded guns in our cars on school property. Not too many kids of school age had handguns in that rural setting. Whether we like it or not, the laws at both the federal and state levels, at least for now, do not allow students to have handguns in schools. Federal law prohibits possession of handguns by anyone under 18, I believe, unless they are supervised by a parent or legal guardian.

So, we can debate the laws, but right now the kids broke the law, even if they didn't intend any harm.

That being said, the schools and the authorities will not be able to protect them if or when the terrorists decide it's time to hit one or more schools. They are very soft targets. Look at what happened in Chechneya. It could happen here. I don't mean to be an alarmist, but I hope people are considering that a school attack by Al Q is a real and likely possibility.

More info out now

Apparently, they were going to trade the guns for about $100.00 each worth of cocaine and other drugs according to news reports out now.

Wonder what the real worth of the guns were?

The Doc is out now.
