I've been meaning to ask about this for a while now.

I've been shooting SG's for over 30 years, and have never seen or heard anything about "custom target barrels" before.

How can this possibly work without flexing like a piece of licorice? And they're shooting 7½ shot at 45 yards. What type of target shooting is that?

Any links that anyone has would be appreciated.

Long-distance unofficial trap games. Some club shoots do all sorts of crazy stuff.

My trap gun (34" barrel, not 60!) came with Extra Full and a Turkey Super Extra Full chokes because a previous owner had participated in this sort of debauchery.:)

What you want to avoid, BTW, is the receiver used extensively with this barrel. The reason they use 870's is that they're some of the only guns that don't get blasted to bits by the heavy loads. And even some 870 receivers crack!

Think about the 870s you've seen with 100,000 rounds or more through them, and they look like new. Consider what it takes to actually BREAK a receiver!:)

I've heard that game wardens use those kind of barrels in combination with subsonic shotgun ammo to take out geese or other birds that they have to deal with in populated areas, golf courses, etc. Veeeerryy quiet. Crow hunters also like 'em.

Card shooting games seems to be what this one was built for. People do some crazy stuff to get birdshot close to the X in a card.

But...

Where do you get a mag extension long enough to do that barrel justice???!!
48+1 in the pipe!

Then you'll need a pair of pistol grips in order to make it tactical. :D

Q: Have you shot Federal paper 9's at 58 ft.? I have never seen a barrel shoot very good at 45 yds. with a choke that tight.

A: paper 9s at 58 feet is what i refered to earlier as a 2-2-10 and this barrel is not designed to shoot this shell

Q: with a .745 bore,have you ever tried a .655 or a .660 choke.a .638 choke is real tight..

It's for card shooting, AKA turkey shoots in some areas. At a measured distance, with the same ammunition (supplied by the people running the shoot) competitors fire at small cards crossed with an X. Person getting a pellet nearest the X wins.

It's a popular fundraiser in rural areas- note the following:

http://www.manchestersportsmanclub.org/gpage5.html

Welcome to the Manchester Sportsman Club Turkey Shoot Info. page.

The shoots begin at 12:00 noon and will last until we run out of prizes or we all want to leave. It usually ends around 2:00 or 3:00 pm. For those of you not familiar with how a turkey shoot works, it is simple. All you need to bring is:

(1) A 12-gauge shotgun.
(2) Hearing and Eye protection.
(3) Money (more on that below).
(4) A good attitude.

As you may or may not know, we don’t shoot live turkeys nor do we give away live turkeys or any animals. Our turkey shoots are very simple, and the only thing getting hurt is paper and your ego. Basically, we stand about 20 yards away from a paper target with an X in the middle of it. We have 10 people in line to shoot and each person has 1 shot at their own target. The person with a hole closest to the center of the X, wins. Prizes include meats, gift certificates, shirts and other prizes. The cost is $3 per shot. The prizes are generally valued at $10 - $20 dollars.

Everyone involved has a good time and anyone that can hold a shotgun in the standing position (or sitting if you are unable to stand) is invited to test their skills.

:)

Lee nailed it.

Interesting to see, a lot of fun, great folks. I won one once using my SX1 with the .710 external knurled Nu-Line chokes. Ammo supplied was Peters Blue Paper Target loads. Distance was 21 yds. I won a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun.

Now what is real interesting, unlike Clay shooters wanting forcing cones lengthened to reduce the step and other things done to shotguns - these guys actually do the opposite. Gets real involved, the gyst is getting the pattern to be closest to the X.

I had won in the general fun event. The big boys got up there with thier various special guns, this time money in a hat, and I am not speaking of Ones and Fives either.

Great bunch of folks, kids, ladies, and as stated, just show up and be able to shoot a shotgun. Watching the smaller kids shoot .410 single shots at closer targets was like watching a T ball game...what a hoot!

Regular skeet, trap, 5 stand or Sporting Clay ranges and "fun shoots" or "kids days" we did these as well...

My 1400 in 20 ga with the deluxe walnut stock and factory Win-chokes used to always win this event at various club shoots along with "shoot the string" events.

[Hang a 6oz lead sinker by 6# fishing line and at a $1 a shot using # 9 shot skeet loads only, from anywhere from 10 -15 yds try to hit the string and win a prize, you could not shoot the sinker, nor what is was hanging from...had to shoot at the string itself...we adapted yds to shooters, I let a 5 y/o shoot from 3 ft once with a popcorn load. from a .410 single shot..yeah the string broke, she won a box of corn dogs...imagine that...*wink* ]

I/we just had guns over at these events for anyone to use.

The turkey hunters would bring their turkey guns and "no wonder you missed getting a turkey" was revealed, most guys (not clay shooters) had never patterned a shotgun.

My stepson at the time "almost" won a prize his first shot. I knew that grin, just tossed a ten in the pot and said have fun.

He won a ham on his 3rd shot with that 1400 in 20ga , then broke the string on his 4 th shot and won a 6 pk of cornish hens.

I thought that kid was never gonna shut up, we both almost could not get back into my truck (a bit swollen we were) to return home and his mom...never got to ask if he had fun...he just lit in to her, showing off "his winnings" and even got the dog excited .

"Wanna bet?"
