It's for card shooting, AKA turkey shoots in some areas. At a measured distance, with the same ammunition (supplied by the people running the shoot) competitors fire at small cards crossed with an X. Person getting a pellet nearest the X wins.
It's a popular fundraiser in rural areas- note the following:
http://www.manchestersportsmanclub.org/gpage5.html
Welcome to the Manchester Sportsman Club Turkey Shoot Info. page.
The shoots begin at 12:00 noon and will last until we run out of prizes or we all want to leave. It usually ends around 2:00 or 3:00 pm. For those of you not familiar with how a turkey shoot works, it is simple. All you need to bring is:
(1) A 12-gauge shotgun.
(2) Hearing and Eye protection.
(3) Money (more on that below).
(4) A good attitude.
As you may or may not know, we don’t shoot live turkeys nor do we give away live turkeys or any animals. Our turkey shoots are very simple, and the only thing getting hurt is paper and your ego. Basically, we stand about 20 yards away from a paper target with an X in the middle of it. We have 10 people in line to shoot and each person has 1 shot at their own target. The person with a hole closest to the center of the X, wins. Prizes include meats, gift certificates, shirts and other prizes. The cost is $3 per shot. The prizes are generally valued at $10 - $20 dollars.
Everyone involved has a good time and anyone that can hold a shotgun in the standing position (or sitting if you are unable to stand) is invited to test their skills.
