624 Lew Horton?

Approximately 500 624's went thru S&W years ago with less than acceptable steel makeup of the cylinder. There was a recall and some cyls. were replaced. Hopefully they're not lieing to me as I just called them. There is according to the rep I talked to a serial # range that these suspect guns fall into. Mine is not in that range according to the S&W "voice on the phone". I had a 4" 624 SB at one time with box. On the end, over-stamping the model #, description, etc., was a "C" in a circle. That circle c meant the gun went back to S&W and either the cyl. was replaced or it was cleared as O.K. in terms of cyl. metallurgy makeup. I have no box for the gun I just purchased. So if you're concerned call S&W. They have no more replacement cyls., and it's my understanding some people have received new replacement guns if your gun falls into recall category. All info I provided other than my personal call to S&W is stuff gleaned off sites like this.

There's a big thread on the recall issue over at www.smith-wessonforum.com. I also have one of the 624s 4 inch, SB. Luckily, for my piece of mind, the gun came with the original box which had the red circle C stamp on it. Nevertheless I email S&W and was told "I don't think you'll have a problem." Not exactly reassuring, but I got the gun cheap and if it blows, I'm sure S&W will take care of me. According to most sources, there are no identifying stamps on the guns indicating that the cylinders are ok. This seems kind of stupid to me, since many, many guns change hands without the box and a factory stamp somewhere on the frame or rear of the cylinder would be definitive proof. I've seen a number of 3 inch Lew Horton 624s at gunshows for very reasonable prices. Kind of like to have one myself.

The 3" 624 I bought was $450. Recently N frame 3" .44.'s, or 3.5" 27's, (one of which I just sold) seem to be really high in price around here. I speak of this N.W. Indiana area. I can't remember when I've seen a 624 3", so I jumped on it, regardless of cyl. issue.

624 recall ?

Southpaw, can you give a bit more information? I tried to register on the s and w site you mentioned, but it seems that the folks who run the show over there do not recognise either 'hotmail' or 'yahoo' e-mail addys.

First time I have ever been banned from a place before I set foot in the door.:D

Thanks,

salty.

From S&WFORUM: The recall was for improper heat-treatment of the cylinder. The stainless steel is too soft, and may let go with hot loads. S&W was dealing with the recall by taking the guns in and putting in replacement cylinders. Unfortunately, another member, I can't remember who it was, whote on this forum last week that S&W has run out of the replacement cylinders. He was offered a 629 as a replacement, but turned it down because he already had a 629. So as of now, no fix exists. That member said that S&W said his would be okay as long as mild loads were used, because it had not given him a problem yet. Some members have written that the factory put a stamp on the box end label to identify repaired guns. I know of no mark on the guns themselves.

Supica and Nahas shows it to be made in the first half of 1986. Like "dachsund", I have an ACH10XX 4" and it was in the recall range. Smith was most accomodating and the turnaround was quick. The only problem is that Smith did not mark the guns that have been inspected choosing to identify the box only. If, as you say, there is no box, then you would have to contact Smith to determine it's recall status.

Problem with the cylinders and heat< I believe. If you have the matching box to the revolver and it has a 3/4 in red circle with a C in the center, the problem was corrected or didn't exist on your gun. If you don't have the box that came with the gun, the best way to check is to call Kate @ S&W and give her the serial # of the revolver. She will cross reference and get back to you whether or not your gun was in the group with that particular problem. Hope that it's
not. The secondary issue is that I'm told there are no more replacement cylinders. I'm not sure what they are doing to compensate for that issue. Whether it is a replacement revolver (629), replacemet value or a different cylinder...I can't remember. But others will surely chime in with better info. There was also a post on the forum not too long ago that covered this issue in greater detail. Best wishes.

Some forums will not allow registration using e-mail addresses from free e-mail providers such as hotmail. This is largely to discourage people who have been banned from the site from re-registering under a different userid and continuing to disrupt the site (some people have nothing better to do than cause problems - another example of a few nitwits ruining it for the rest of us).

The post I mentioned was in the modern revolvers section and was stickied for the longest time. They should let you search without registering.

I have it bookmarked at home. I'll post a more specific link to it later.

There was a thread over at www.thefiringline.com on this subject also. Quite a bit of useful info in that one too.
