I have never seen a wright up on a 640 SS S&W J FRAME. I would like your opions on this gun. I have seen very few of these and I have had mine for several years and I like it so much I put a Crimson Trace Lazer Grip on it. I use it for CC but I like the way it shoots. I am easily please and very low teck So I would like your imput. THANKS ken

I like mine, very nice trigger for a DAO.
Shoot it a bit better than my 36 in single action.

While I prefer the 642 .38 Centennial for carry I do have a few 640-1 and 60-1s (that is .357s)

They are all good guns (and so is the Ruger SP101.) Bit heavy but not to heavy at all for carry in a good IWB appendix position holster.

You can use Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWHP .38s at a true 1000 fps from the 640-1 or just good DPX .357s. And if that is a mite to much Buffalo Bore makes a non +P .38 that gives the same 158gr LSWHP at 850 from a 2 inch barrel (and that is basically the FBI load in power from a snub!)

Had 2

I owned one and sold it as I was using a G-27 for a BUG gun instead [ the 640-1 was ankle worn] .

Then got a great deal on another and now felt it was too heavy so sold it to a fellow on the job Capt.

I prefer the 442 with +P loads,and now a 360 [ S&W ] .357 with +P loads as its only about 9 ounces.

They do BUG duty 99% of the time.

BUG duty = either pocket, ankle or both if in places I would rather not be.

Also note that I still have one of my Ruger SP101's left in 3" barrel and its a BUG in the woods with magnum loads, along with a S&W 386 [ 7 shot .357 scandium 'L' frame]

I really like my M640 and it's not all that hard to fire with .357 Magnum ammo because of it's weight. I don't pocket carry it because I feel it's a little heavy but it rides very easily on of inside your belt.

The original production run M640 38Spl models were unique in sever aspects. Serial numbers prefix CEN followed by four numerals. In the frame window opening for the cylinder there was the following lettering: TESTED FOR +P+. The grips were smooth Rosewood. Follow on production deleted the +P+ wording is there was not an industry standard for +P+.

My fiancee's father has an early 640 in .38 that I shot recently. It's heavy but not excessively so. The +p SJHP Remington ammo we were shooting had a lot of flash and bang to it but the recoil was mild. The gun points well for me but it's still a snubbie, need to practice to stay sharp with it. It's a well made gun overall, better trigger than the SP101 I had.

I bought one for range use when I got my 340PD. I also have CT laser grips on both models. Nice shooter.

I have a 640-1 and like it. I prefer the internal hammer DAO format for concealed carry. I use .357 mag 110 gr. ammo in it. Recoil and blast are substantial but not something that can't be handled with the right stocks and lots of practice. It points well for me. I don't like pocket carry so that isn't an issue. It carries well in an IWB holster and the weight of it is reasonable with that carry mode. It is simple and reliable. It has never failed to fire and will handle a wide spectrum of ammo without choking. It is only a five shot revolver and so it would be somewhat of a disadvantage in an extended, high volume gun battle. That is very unlikely to happen to someone such as myself who carries for civilian personal defense. For the quickest reloading, I just carry my bobbed hammer S&W 337. I came close to trading the 640-1 but came to my senses and didn't. It's not going anywhere.

My opinion is that it is possibly the greatest J frame ever made.

I had some trouble with it initially, but S&W helped me out. No big deal, as I've had some trouble with my Gp100 that Ruger helped me out with too. I always give manufacturers a chance to make things right, and then test thoroughly afterwards.

I tend to pocket carry it, but have taken it around town in an IWB holster as well. In point of fact it is in my pocket right now, using the same MIKA's pocket holster that my 442 broke in for me. I don't mind the weight.

The pro model featured here has no internal lock, sports a fluted barrel and tritium night sights, and is cut for moonclips. I use regular old HKS speedloaders (which the altamont and badger grips allowed for) since I found the moonclips were too fragile for me to be comfortable with on a ccw basis. The badger boot grips give me just a little bit more vertical space for a good grip with the pinky.

Keeping it loaded at the moment with Buffalo Barnes 125 grain XPB bullet (1225 ft/s out of a short barrel) and Underwood's 158 grain gold dot hollow point.

I was in the market for a 640 or an Sp101. Both are great firearms, but the Sp101 was just a bit too bulky for my needs at the time. The 640 had the right mix of power, strength, and concealability that I was looking for.
