642 Club Part Deux

Added a new J frame to my arsenal - a 640-1 in 357 Mag (pre-lock like all my others). The 640 is on the left center in the group of six.

Took the new little guy to the range and tried some +P and 357 Mag through the chrony. Will probably carry with the +P as it's a lot more pleasant to shoot. Also want my spare ammo (in speedstirps) to be +P as it's useable in either the 442 or the 640, if I carry both.

The Gold Dot 135 gr +P avg. velocity was 918fps. The Hornady 140 gr FTX 357 mag avg. velocity was 1187 fps. Thats almost a 30% increase.

I've been the proud owner of a S&W 642 for 3 years now. Adding the Hogue grip just improved my situation. I have very large hands, and need that 5th finger slot. I fire Remington/UMC .38 special rounds on the range, and carry Remington Golden Saber .38 +P rounds for CC in my pocket holster.

My question is that at 6'3" & 275, the 642 makes the ultimate pocket carry handgun for me. But, will it make the best handgun for a friend of mine?

She is a petite woman that stands 5' 5" and weighs a wopping 125. She has never owned a firearm before, and want's not only to buy one for home defense, but wants to beable to carry it in her purse or on her person.

I have had her out to the range once, and she fired my 642 very well. At self defense distances, she was dead on. I also took her through my family of Sig Sauer, Beretta, and Kimber. She always came back to the 642. I'm taking her out to a range next week, and I want her to run some +P rounds through it.

Is an airweight 5 shot revolver the right choice for this woman. Slight of build, in desperate need of a handgun, pocket, purse, or personal carry. Home defense: it's certainly better than the golfclub she's using now.

I thinking" revolver, simple, no safety to mess with, no de-cocker, fits her hand well, fires the handgun well, no hammer to get hung up in anything. Even though she is slight of build, sound like a no brainer to me. I did rule out my 629 3".

Any comments would be welcome.

rwb -- if she likes it, is able to shoot it well, and, as it seems, went back to it in preference to other guns to shoot it some more, then there should be no question that it will work for her.

There are lot sof reasons why it's a good choice.

Joined the club 442 SAF / Heller

I FINALLY get to join the club!

Last week I picked up a brand new 442 SAF (Second Amendment Foudnation) the one with the Heller Vs DC scales of justice on it and part of the 2nd amendment.

Today I may even get around to shooting it!!

Fine family pic, Ranger. ;)

RWB, start with the weakest loads you can find to let her get used to it.
Forget the +p to start with; go for target rnd wadcutters.
Once she's shot about 50 of them, add a cylinder of +p.

Think about the value of easy .22 for a new shooter.
(And even a .22 will ruin a bg's day. :uhoh: )

Welcome in, Ric.
What took you so long? ;)

RWB - The 642 is about as fool proof as they come for the first five shots. She needs to shoot a lot to develop her comfort level and understand her limitations; as Nem said, low power target rounds ( a lot of them) are perfect for practice.

Really not sure why it took so long.

I kept looking for just the right one...I wanted a snubbie with patina and a history, not sure why. I found several that I offered to buy, but told the previous owners "you won't get the chance to ever buy YOUR FATHERS gun back if you sell it to me....I want to you to think about that before you sell it" and they wised up and kept the piece.

Then I really followed the Heller situation, read everything I could about it, met some of the attorneys even.

When this gun was announced I figured I would celebrate and start my own history and story with this gun so I could pass it down 30 years from now to a deserving son. Hopefully they won't sell their fathers gun then and because of Heller I hope they will still be able to own a gun then!!!

I think a real sleeper in training and carry ammo for our 642s, especially with newbies, is the older 148gr lead full wadcutter. Often considered anemic in comparison to +Ps, they are easy to shoot. I have no empirical data for this - just my gut feeling. The wound channel made by a largest meplat available flat nose must produce more 'fight stops' than certainly the 158gr LRN, aka 'The Widowmaker'. And - as to availability - the old target ammo appears in older stores and gunshow dealers - with older, aka cheaper, prices, too. A shop I pass going to the range had three different brands - all closeout priced.

Okay, brag time. I wanted a 60 Pro - had some bills put back. I have always wanted a 4" 617 - couldn't stand it. I cleaned the account out Friday - bought a new 4" 617 ($609 + s/t - I bought a new 6" 629 there for $40 less three years ago!). We can eat beans - they are good for you! Besides, my wife gets paid Thursday... hmmm... wonder if they still have the 60 Pro? Maybe a 642CT?

Anyhow, this thing is fun - and, I broke it in well - <$14/550 ammo, too! I borrowed the Ahrends grips from my 6" 66.

A Happy Stainz!

Can't afford all the Smith wheelguns I'd like to have. (My father-in-law knows a former employer who supposedly owns about one of every Smith revolver made. I'm pretty sure that's an exageration. Wish I had gotten to just see some of them.)

I have a few other S&W wheelguns but I kind of concentrated on J frames in a small way. I'm actually down-sizing my small gun collection now because of worsening economic times now and the future. Will hold on to the J frames as long as possible.

Welcome

Stainz that's a beauty for sure.

"Hello, I'm DAdams, and I haven't been in a gun shop for 97 days".

Well guys. I finally found a Centennial that didn't make me hesitate today - a Model 042. Quite unusual. Didn't buy it outright, but it's on layaway. So I guess I can finally join the club. The gun is flawless except for a few very small scratches on the topstrap. I'm looking forward to getting it.

Snubbies... hmmm... 3" or less okay?
Stainz, that's a beautiful set.
(Only thing its missing is an M&P340. ;) )
Those grips on the 3" are superb.

Your question raises one for me that I've never considered before: what defines a snub?

I've always assumed it was a barrel closer to 2", not more than 2.5". I've never consider my 65 a snub.

Yet, Wikipedia agrees with you: 2" to 3".

Very interesting.

Hey, that means I'm totally a snubnose guy.

Wow, learn new stuff about myself every day. :D

NO-lock 642 Report

Was at the Chantilly (Dulles) gun show today (9/13). Trader Jerry had several 642's, only one left with no lock. Same price with or without - $399.95.
The clerk I asked was not sure, but did not think that S&W planned to make any more. He said he heard that this run was "an accident."
I don't buy the accident part.

...what defines a snub?

I asked Andy Stanford the same question back when Fran and I were making plans to attend OPS' Snubby Summit. Fran wanted to carry her favorite 3" K frame, but we didn't know if it was acceptable. The answer was "Sure, it's fine."

Mas Ayoob carried a 2.5" Colt (Python IIRC) and far as I recall was the only other six-shooter there... cheaters! :D

Haven't heard of the Summit before? It was great- wish it could be done again...

Ranger7 - what is the make and model of the ankle holster in your picture on this page?

Thanks in advance!

traded in lock for no lock

Well, after thinking about this since I found out about the new no lock 642's, I finally traded in my lock for a no-lock 642. My dealer only charged me $50 plus tax for the trade since I just bought my original lock 642 before the no locks became available. I really like the looks of this gun and am happy that I was able to obtain a no lock model. For me , for $50 it was worth it.

Well, after 6 months of my 642-2 as the everyday carry, it's time for a detailed report.

First off, like so many of my colleagues in the club, I started with a Nemesis holster while waiting for the Mika Round Cut. Once the Mika arrived, it was my daily holster. However, I found myself coming back to the Nemesis more and more, especially if the pockets are a little shallower. Both do a great job of breaking up the outline of the 642, but I found that the Nemesis puts the butt of the grip farther forward in a shallower pocket, thereby doing a better job of hiding the silver backstrap from those standing behind me (A Mika Square Cut will probably do the same thing as the Nemesis). Probably nothing to worry about, but that's the one identifier that bugs me more than any printing that may occur through the pocket. The Mika continues to serve when I'm wearing pants with deeper pockets. When I go to a Hogue Bantam grip or maybe a darker wood grip and the silver backstrap is no longer visible, I don't think it will matter. I will probably go with a wood grip. The recoil doesn't bother me, but I think I want the grip to be less "sticky" in the pocket.

At the range, I usually just run 130gr Winchester White Box through it and mix in defense rounds; for carry, I stuff it with Speer Gold Dot 135gr +P. I've tried most of the popular defense loads including the FBI load, Golden Sabres, BB, and most others. I find I shoot the Gold Dots the best. Of course, your results may vary. I carry 2 speed strips in the 2x2 format. Carrying 5 just slows down the reload too much, and brings too much "thinking" into the equation. God forbid, if I need a reload under pressure, the fewer hangups-the better. Range practice includes normal stance, one hand, off hand, and pretty much all point shooting, and much of it while moving. I usually get to the range every two weeks or so. Cleaning is relatively easy.

I'm starting to get some "character marks" on the frame of the 642 from holster wear as it rides in the Nemesis. The back-right of the top strap/rear sight channe, and the bottom left of the frame where the cylinder swing arm attaches are much shinier than the rest of the 642. As I examine the holster with the 642 in it, they're definitely friction points. No big deal--it means it's adapting to me :).

I do also have an evil bottom feeding XD40 Service that will probably get more carry time once it cools off here in North Texas. My changing attire will make it easier and more comfortable to conceal. Having said that, the 642 will always be there. It's so light and comfortable to carry, you really do forget it's there. There is something very comforting to be able to walk across a dark parking lot with my hand on the grip, nobody being the wiser.

I'm currently shopping for both an IWB and OWB holster for the 642, and am relying on this thread (as well as the first 642 Club thread) for the recommendations and personal experience of everyone.

I hope this helps others that are starting their relationship with this fantastic little revolver.

Cheers!

Question about the finish:

Some time ago I bought, but have not yet opened, a "Metal Care Cloth" made by PRO-SHOT Products, Taylorville IL. Item # MMC. Supposed to remove powder fowling, rust, tarnish, tarnish, etc., on blued, stainless and chrome surfaces.

Any idea how the 642 clear coat would react?

Thanks in advance.

Lee, great to see you in the club house.
Hang out. Great bunch of folks here.
We can use a lot more of your knowledge and wisdom.

Read most of that second link. Very interesting summit.
(Way more interesting that G8. We could call ours Gx42. :D )

Camjr, nice report. Interesting to read an alternative perspective on the pocket holsters.

I have no doubt that Mr. Mika produces a great holster.
(I've got one, though not used for pocket duty.)

But if something else works better for you for what ever reason,
I [strike]think[/strike] know he'd respect your choice.

I carry mine in a Desantis Speed Scabbard OWB.

After two years, I have zero complaints.

I'm late to the party, but glad to be here. I just bought a no-lock 642 yesterday. I love it. I've put about 300 rounds of general target ammo through it thus far while I try and get to know it.

I've got questions but I figure I'll try and plow through a few hundred pages of this thread before I bring them up.

I've had this one for a few months. Great pocket carry (Uncle Mike's pocket holster). Good little shooter once I got accustomed to the size and trigger. This is a lock version. I've had no problems with the lock moving. Anyone had problems with one suddenly deciding to lock?
